General Description of the Job Class

Perform a variety of manual and semi-skilled grounds maintenance tasks.

 

Duties and Responsibilities of this Level

*Assist in preparing seed beds, mixing fertilizer, soil, sand and other horticultural materials.

*Assist in the planting, cultivating, fertilizing and spraying of grass seeds, shrubbery, flower bulbs, trees and plants.

*Mow grass, rake leaves, trim hedges and edge sidewalks and driveways.

*Participate in the removal of dirt, sand, rubbish, snow, leaves and debris.

*Clean gardening tools and make minor repairs to mowers and other grounds maintenance equipment.

*Operate such equipment as gasoline-powered mowers, shears, edgers, saws, sprayers, and leaf grinding machines.

*May plant and transplant flowers, shrubs, trees and other landscaping items under direction.

*Participate in Continuous Quality Improvement activities as needed/required.

*Perform other related work as assigned.

Education:

Any combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.

 

Experience:

Degrees, Licensure, and/or Certification:

*Must have a valid N. C. driver's license and good driving record.

*May be required to obtain a valid health card issued by DRH in accordance with Durham County Health Department

 

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

*Some knowledge of basic groundskeeping and elementary horticultural practices and procedures. Some knowledge of pruning, spraying, and trimming requirements of shrubs and trees.

*Some knowledge of the layout of the hospital grounds area. Some knowledge of the hazards and applicable safety requirements of equipment and machines used. Ability to make minor repairs to mowers, sprayers, pruners and other grounds maintenance equipment and tools.

*Ability to follow simple oral and written instructions. Ability to perform strenuous work under varying weather conditions. Ability to maintain effective working relationships with other employees. Ability to read, comprehend and follow oral and written instructions.
