General Description of the Job Class

Administer the following Performance Services responsibilities for Duke University Hospital, Duke Raleigh Hospital, Durham Regional Hospital, and other entities within the Duke University Health System. This includes the following:

Management engineering - to include the productivity management system, labor budgeting and productivity/process analyses and improvement.

Operational Support - supporting Senior Operational leadership with focused analyses or improvement efforts and management of administrative projects and efforts.

Clinical performance improvement - to include clinical decision support and ongoing performance improvement support.

Performance Monitoring - to include management of the balanced scorecard and reporting of related performance metrics.

Quality Management - to include analytical and reporting support of the institutions quality and patient safety programs.

Patient Satisfaction - to include administering the patient satisfaction survey and coordination and support of related performance improvement efforts.

 

Duties and Responsibilities of this Level

The Director oversees the following work performed at the various entities:

Management Engineering:

Development and maintenance of labor standards used to develop departmental staffing requirements. These same standards are also used as procedural level labor standards to be used by the Cost Accounting staff of Corporate Finance and Hospital Departmental Managers in the costing and flexible budgeting techniques employed by the Transition One Financial and Clinical Information System.

Development and management of a productivity management program to include ongoing monitoring of labor performance and the education of Hospital management on various topics related to productivity management and improvement strategies.

Support of Hospital leadership with productivity improvement efforts to include analyses of departments and processes.

Operational Support: Support of Hospital leadership with project management and analytical support of operational initiatives. Clinical Performance Improvement:

Development and initiation of clinical analyses in support of the CSU leadership to improve the management of care. Coordinate the improvement process as appropriate.

Ongoing decision support in support of operational improvement efforts and business analysis and development.

Routine reporting to monitor success of improvement efforts.

Performance Reporting:

Management of the balanced scorecard program and related reporting.

Development and implementation of reporting o provide ongoing monitoring of: Operational performance

Cost and utilization

Labor productivity

Major initiatives

Outcomes and patient safety

Employee turnover

Quality Management:

Provide routine reporting of key quality and patient safety metrics in support of the ongoing quality management process.

Provide analytical support as required in support of performance improvement teams.

Patient Satisfaction:

Oversee the administration of the hospital-wide patient satisfaction survey. To include: Routine communication of results to all levels of Hospital and Health System Leadership

Coordination and support the improvement efforts designed to improve the overall patient satisfaction scores as appropriate.

Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein.

 

Required Qualifications at this Level

Education:

Work requires analytical, organization and communication skills generally acquired through completion of a master's degree program.

 

Experience:

At least ten years of experience with an extensive knowledge of hospital operations.
