General Description of the Job Class

The Operations Manager, Occ & Env Safety supports the Occupational and Environmental Safety Office (OESO) Division Director with coordination of environmental, health and safety operations of a division. Support may include supervision and mentorship of personnel, preparation of division budget, and filling in for the OESO Division Director when necessary.

 

Duties and Responsibilities of this Level

Participate in the strategic planning for assigned areas and assists the OESO Division Director in developing and implementing the overall division strategic plan. Assists in the development and monitoring of divisional operational work plans.

Provide mentorship, technical leadership, and functional guidance to other division staff to foster enhanced productivity and professional development and to ensure that all applicable standards are being met.

Manage major programs related to division objectives. Develop and recommend policies and procedures to effectively administer such programs. Recognize the need for new programs or modification of existing programs in order to meet regulatory or other requirements.

Design, develop, and conduct special studies in the assigned functional area. Direct the collection and evaluation of data through assigned teams.

Maintain up-to-date knowledge and understanding of new or anticipated regulations or compliance interpretations that may affect Divisional activities. Make recommendations to the OESO Division Director.

Coordinate construction/renovation plan reviews within division

Serve as liaison with appropriate State and Federal regulating agencies.

Coordinate work of teams in developing or improving training programs specific to the division. Advise/assist the OESO Division Director with administrative responsibilities including budget, staff management, recruitment, task assignment, etc.

Represent the OESO Division Director in meetings, conferences, and other affairs.

Perform other duties as assigned by the OESO Division Director.

 

Required Qualifications at this Level

Education:

Bachelor's degree in biology, environmental health and safety, environmental sciences, physics, health physics, medical physics, laboratory science, industrial hygiene, fire science or other science related field relevant to the function of the specific division.

 

Experience:

Five years related experience. Supervisory experience preferred.

 

Degrees, Licensure, and/or Certification:

Certification in the appropriate discipline strongly preferred.

 

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Proven knowledge of all federal, state and local laws/regulations pertaining to a specific area of EH&S.

Effective organizational and personnel management skills.

Ability to utilize computer technology to access data, maintain records, and generate reports.

Ability to interface with Duke faculty and staff at all levels. Excellent verbal and oral communication skills.

Broad knowledge of theories, principles and techniques in a specific field of EH&S.
