General Description of the Job Class

Direct the Clinical Engineering group, ensuring that patient care instrumentation used throughout the Duke University Health System (DUHS) is safe and effective.

 

Duties and Responsibilities of this Level

Direct all aspects of acquisition, maintenance, and repair of the equipment, including component-level troubleshooting, as well as ongoing training and education of staff related to safe medical device uses and practices.

Establish and define departmental goals and objectives to meet individual Hospital and DUHS goals and objectives. Plan, implement and evaluate programs to meet departmental goals. Prepare departmental budget, present to VP & CIO DUHS for approval, and monitor budgets and expenses to control or justify variances.

Establish departmental policies and procedures that are consistent with Hospital and University Policies and Procedures and which promote organized operation of the function.

Maintain standards of practice consistent throughout the Health System, and ensure that the accreditation standards of JCAHO and other accrediting agencies are met.

Monitor and facilitate intra- and interdepartmental activities.

Monitor effectiveness of departmental programs and incorporate new technology, procedures and program ideas to maintain state-of-the-art practice. Develop new program proposals as needed/requested including budgetary as well as operational components.

Direct the personnel management of the group to include organization and staffing; performance management; personnel policy interpretation, advising and implementation; staff development, productivity; and resource allocation.

Ensure provision of 24 hour, seven day, on-call to support DUHS' Clinical Engineering needs.

Direct the evaluation of new technology for patient care, the development of specifications for medical equipment acquisition, the development of custom computer programs, the design of test procedures for medical devices and the design of custom devices as needed.

Direct and manage the repair of medical equipment including radiology and radiology-related equipment used throughout the Hospital complex, including the MRI and CT scanners. Direct the repair program and the preventive maintenance program in the Hospital including medical imaging areas; ensure the documentation of all repair activities and orders, and maintain stock of repair parts to ensure rapid repair of defective equipment.

Represent Clinical Engineering on committees, maintain departmental records, and attend Management Council and other administrative meetings as appropriate

Direct and manage preventive maintenance on medical equipment, including radiology equipment, through adjustment or replacement of items on a scheduled basis to prevent equipment failures.

Ensure the review of supplies, instrumentation, and facilities in the Hospitals relative to safety and performance and recommend required or desirable changes. Specify requirements relative to national code and standards or accreditation requirements.

Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein.

 

Required Qualifications at this Level

Education:

Position requires analytical, organizational and communications skills generally acquired through completion of a bachelor???s degree program. Master of Clinical or Biomedical Engineering preferred.

 

Experience:

Work requires a minimum of seven years clinical/biomedical technology, including management and leadership experience. Experience with MRI and CT equipment preferred.
