General Description of the Job Class

The Clinical Nursing Instructor is responsible for providing high- quality and evidenced based, clinical education to nursing students.

This role involves teaching, mentoring, and evaluating students in clinical/lab settings to ensure they acquire the necessary skills and knowledge to excel in their nursing careers.

Schedule: Monday-Friday 8-hour and 12-hour shifts depending on clinical course assignment.

 

Duties and Responsibilities of this Level

- Clinical/Lab Instruction: Provide hands-on clinical/lab instruction and supervision to nursing students in various healthcare settings. Utilize sound principles of andragogy. Able to instruct student nurses in the theoretical and clinical aspects of the practice of nursing. Uses evidenced-based practices as applicable in the clinical setting. Assists students through observational and participative experiences to apply nursing theory, the nursing process, clinical judgment and nursing techniques in clinical settings. Instructs students and facilitates discussions about accepted methods of nursing practice including professional aspects of nursing, theories of physiology and psychodynamics, assessment of functional health patterns, nursing interventions, and medical, surgical, holistic and allied health treatments.

- Curriculum Development: Assist in the development and implementation of clinical/lab education curricula and instructional materials. Strives continuously to improve the quality of student nursing instruction.

- Student Evaluation: Assess and evaluate student performance in clinical/lab through direct observation, feedback, and formal evaluations. Assigns students to patients and observes performance in actual nursing situations. Maintains necessary records to indicate student progress. Consults with course/clinical faculty regarding student progression.

- Mentorship: Offer guidance and support to students, fostering a positive and conducive learning environment.

- Collaboration: Work closely with academic faculty and healthcare professionals to ensure a cohesive and comprehensive educational experience. Ability to coordinate instructional experiences with nursing staff personnel. Participates with other faculty members and student committees in planning and coordinating extracurricular activities to promote the cultural, physical and social development of students. Participates in quality improvement activities in both the college and corporation.

- Compliance: Ensure all clinical activities comply with institutional policies, accreditation standards, and regulatory requirements. Assist with the preparation of reports required by national and state accrediting agencies.

- Professional Development: Stay current with advancements in nursing practice and education through continuous professional development. Serves on various professional and faculty committees.

- Perform related work as required.

 

Required Qualifications at this Level

Education:

BSN required, Master's degree in Nursing preferred.

 

Experience:

Minimum of 3 years of full-time clinical nursing experience, required. One year of clinical instructor experience preferred.

 

Degrees, Licensure, and/or Certification:

Active, unencumbered RN license in the state of North Carolina (NCAC 36.0318), required.

Maintains current BLS certification; skills and knowledge required for the clinical setting where the clinical practicum is conducted. (i.e.: age-specific competencies, glucometer, etc.)

 

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Strong clinical skills, excellent communication and interpersonal abilities, and proficiency in using educational technology and simulation tools.
