The residency/fellowship position in rehabilitation services is designed to provide advanced training and experience in the field of rehabilitation. The resident/fellow will work closely with experienced professionals to develop skills in patient care, research, and education. The resident/fellow will participate in a variety of clinical settings and will be involved in the development and implementation of treatment plans for patients with a wide range of conditions based on specialty area.
Clinical Duties/Requirements
- Clinical Reasoning: Demonstrate and articulate sound clinical reasoning in synthesizing complex evaluation data, identifying diagnoses, and developing comprehensive care plans.
- Plan of Care: Develop and update appropriate plans of care in collaboration with the patient and family, with measurable long and short-term goals and a defined discharge plan.
- Age-Appropriate Competency: Perform age-appropriate competency skills in the area of practice and with respect to individual patient problems.
- Intervention Protocols: Follow intervention protocols and alter plans of care as needed.
- Patient Discharge: Discharge patients when goals have been met or medical necessity no longer warrants intervention.
- Continuing Services: Establish provisions for continuing services or follow-up as needed.
- Productivity Standards: Consistently meet patient care productivity standards as established for the job classification.
- Team Collaboration: Work cooperatively with supervisors and peers to contribute to the overall productivity of the team.
- Support Personnel: Utilize support personnel (aides, senior aides, assistants) as appropriate and available.
- Patient Coverage: Actively support and participate in patient coverage efforts across all divisions within the department as necessary.
- Patient and Family Education: Assess the learning needs and capabilities of patients and caregivers, initiate education in a timely manner, and utilize appropriate methods and materials for effective learning.
- Documentation: Maintain timely, legible, and efficient patient care documentation that is concise, pertinent, and meets the profession's and department's standards.
- Oral Reporting: Provide clear, concise, relevant, and timely oral reporting.
- Data Collection: Perform all required data collection for the department accurately and within the expected time frame.
- Peer Review: Consistently meet peer review standards.
- Outreach and Learning Activities: Participate in outreach and learning activities, which may include in-services on related topics, generating referrals, and interacting with volunteers or visitors.
- Research Participation: Participate in data collection for research activities to enhance clinical outcomes.
- Other Duties: Perform other related duties incidental to the work described.
Didactic Duties/Requirements
- As a resident/fellow, you will be responsible for maintaining all records required for your specific residency/fellowship program per American Occupational Therapy Association (AOTA)/American Physical Therapy Association (APTA) guidelines.
- Must adhere to all policies/procedures as outlined in the contract agreement and the Duke Health Residency and Fellowship Handbook.
- Must participate in all required activities for the residency/fellowship program as-outlined by the program director and program coordinator.
- Must meet with mentor weekly to review patient caseload and treat patients.
- Expected to shadow mentor, physicians, and other healthcare providers throughout program including observing procedures as appropriate.
- Must attend a minimum of 3-4 hours of didactic learning per week.
- Must present at department academic grand rounds.
- Must present narrative reasoning on difficult case to program director and peers.
- May be asked to present at state and/or national conferences.
- Must attend and participate in quarterly leadership book reviews with program director.
- Must successfully complete quizzes, mid-terms and program exams which will include written and practical based exams.

Bachelor's degree or certification in physical therapy, with Master's or Clinical Doctorate in physical therapy preferred. |
| Experience: | None beyond required education, although more experience may be preferred at times. |
| Degrees, Licensure, and/or Certification: | Current PT/OT license or eligible to practice in NC. Must have NC license before start of residency. Some programs may require certifications or licensures for specific specialty areas. |
