The Assistant Vice President, Advanced Practice (APP) is a clinician- administrator who sets the systemwide strategy and infrastructure for advance practice providers (APPs) - including advanced practice registered nurses (APRNs) and physician assistants (PAs) - across Duke University Health System and DHIP. The AVP ensures top-of-license practice, clinical competency, and optimal care models; leads APP workforce planning, recruitment, and retention; advances professional development; and partners with executive nursing and medical leadership to embed APPs in high-quality, team-based care. The role stewards credentialing/privileging alignment, revenue integrity for APP services, and regulatory compliance, while cultivating an APP culture of excellence, belonging, and continuous improvement.
Enterprise APP strategy & governance - Define and execute the DUHS and DHIP APP vision, roadmap, and operating model aligned to system goals; lead APP policy, practice standards, and governance in partnership with CNE, CMO, and entity leaders.
Operational leadership and team management - lead/supervisor APP directors/managers; set goals, dashboards, and accountability; drive access, quality, safety, experience, and workforce outcomes across inpatient and ambulatory sites.
APP workforce planning, recruitment and retention - forecast demand; optimize staffing, scheduling, and deployment models; oversee recruitment, selection, and onboarding to build a highly engaged, diverse, and equitable APP workforce.
Professional practice, education, and development - establish and drive APP council; standardize orientation, precepting, competency assessment, and annual education; develop professional advancement pathways and (where applicable) ANCC-accredited fellowship(s)
Top of license practice & care model optimization - expand collaborative practice models, panels, and procedures appropriate to licensure; remove practice barriers; scale best practices across entities.
Credentialing/privileging and regulatory compliance - Align with NC Board of Nursing and NC Medical Board rules; ensure Joint Commission/CMS compliance; partner with credentialing bodies on privileging for APP scope.
Data analytics and reporting - maintain APP dashboards (quality, access, productivity, experience, turnover, cost); inform decisions and executive reporting
Academic partnerships & stakeholder engagement - serve as primary liaison to affiliated NP/PA programs; coordinate student placements and preceptors to grow the NC APP pipeline. Build coalitions with physician, nursing, operations, finance, and HR partners; champion the APP role within Duke Health and the broader NC healthcare community
Finance and Growth - Oversees and improves fiscal and operational performance for Advanced Practice and partners with leaders to ensure adequate financial resources support a vision of excellence in clinical and support operations.
| Education: | Master's degree required (e.g., MSN, MS-PA, MHA, MBA, MPH, or related). Clinical doctorate preferred |
| Experience: | Seven years of progressive leadership experience including at least 5 years of experience at the leadership level for advanced practice. Demonstrated success implementing enterprise strategies, practice standards, and governance for APPs in an academic health system or integrated delivery network. Experience leading multi-site operations, recruiting and retaining APPs, and optimizing top-of-license practice and revenue integrity. |
| Degrees, Licensure, and/or Certification: | Active, unrestricted NC license as an APRN or PA. Currently national board certification. Eligibility for NC collaborative practice agreements and privileging per DUHS policies. DEA registration and BLS/ACLS if engaging in clinical practice as part of the role (as applicable) |
| Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: | Strategic leadership with demonstrated ability to translate system goals into scalable APP practice models across inpatient and ambulatory settings. Deep knowledge of NC APRN and PA practice acts, collaborative practice requirements, and credentialing/privileging standards. Expertise in workforce planning, change management, and performance improvement. Proficiency in professional billing/compliance for APP services (CMS, NC Medicaid, commercial payers). Exceptional communication, influence, and relationship-building with physicians, nurses, operations, and academic partners. Data-driven management; ability to design and interpret operational/quality dashboards and make evidence-based decisions. Talent development orientation.
