General Description of the Job Class

The Vice President, Imaging Services provides enterprise-wide strategic, operational, and financial leadership for all diagnostic and interventional imaging services across the academic medical center and its affiliated hospitals, clinics, and ambulatory sites. This executive leader is accountable for advancing clinical excellence, access, growth, quality, safety, and financial sustainability while supporting the academic, research, and teaching missions of the institution.

Reporting to the Chief Operating Officer, Duke University Hospital, the VP partners closely with physician leaders, department chairs, hospital executives, and academic leadership to ensure imaging services are integrated, patient-centered, technologically advanced, and aligned with system strategy.

 

Duties and Responsibilities of this Level

Strategic Leadership

Develop and execute a comprehensive, multi-year strategy for Imaging Services that supports clinical excellence, academic advancement, research, and system growth.

Serve as the enterprise leader for imaging strategy across inpatient, outpatient, and ambulatory settings.

Partner with physician and academic leaders to advance subspecialty imaging, innovation, and research capabilities.

Clinical Operations & Quality

Provide executive oversight of all imaging modalities (e.g., diagnostic radiology, interventional radiology, nuclear medicine, MRI, CT, ultrasound, mammography).

Ensure high standards of quality, patient safety, regulatory compliance, and accreditation across all imaging sites.

Drive continuous improvement in patient experience, access, throughput, and operational efficiency.

Financial & Business Performance

Accountable for the financial performance of the imaging service line, including operating margin, capital planning, and long-range financial forecasting.

Lead business planning for new programs, technology investments, facility expansions, and ambulatory growth.

Optimize resource utilization, productivity, and cost management while maintaining quality and access.

Physician & Academic Partnership

Collaborate closely with radiology physician leadership, department chairs, and faculty to align clinical operations with academic priorities.

Support recruitment, retention, and development of top-tier physician and administrative imaging leaders.

Enable teaching and training programs consistent with the academic mission.

People & Culture

Lead and develop a high-performing imaging leadership team across multiple sites and functions.

Foster a culture of accountability, collaboration, diversity, equity, inclusion, and continuous learning.

Provide mentorship and succession planning for key imaging leadership roles.

Technology, Innovation & Growth

Oversee imaging technology strategy, including adoption of advanced modalities, AI-enabled tools, and digital workflow optimization.

Partner with IT, research, and innovation teams to advance imaging informatics and data-driven decision-making.

Support enterprise growth initiatives, including new facilities, joint ventures, and regional expansion.

 

Required Qualifications at this Level

Education:

Master's degree required in healthcare administration, business administration, public health, or a related field.

Advanced clinical degree or fellowship training in radiology or related discipline preferred.

 

Experience:

Minimum of 10 years of progressive healthcare leadership experience, including significant senior leadership responsibility in imaging or diagnostic services.

Demonstrated experience leading complex, multi-site imaging operations within a large health system or academic medical center.

Proven track record in financial management, strategic planning, physician partnership, and operational transformation.
