General Description of the Job Class

Coordinate and participate in specialized and complex technical tasks involved in screening slides of clinical specimens to detect evidence of cancer or other pathological conditions

Duties and Responsibilities of this Level

May perform any or all of the following duties: *Coordinate and participate in specialized and complex technical tasks involved in screening slides of clinical specimens for evidence of cancer or other pathological conditions to include marking abnormalities, recording diagnoses and filing cases for subsequent review with pathologist.

*Coordinate technical activities in the cytology preparatory laboratory and monitor and day-to-day activities of the cytology laboratory. *Review patient history for each case; coordinate files of slides, diagnosis and laboratory reports; maintain files of teaching slides for cytology students

*Assist in the individual instruction of cytology students; provide technical instruction and guidance to interns, residents and employees.

*Evaluate collected laboratory data and prepare reports setting forth progress, adverse trends and appropriate recommendations for conclusions.

*Participate in the development of new procedures; plan and develop workshops. *Make work assignments ensuring adequate manning for performance of laboratory tasks; review work of lower level employees; assist in the training of new personnel. *Recommend various personnel actions including hiring, performance appraisals, promotions, transfers and vacation schedules.

*Perform other related duties incidental to the work described here.
