General Description of the Job Class

Provide a variety of services to international patients and their families temporarily residing in Duke-sponsored apartments; perform a variety of interpretation, translation and medical escort services to assist non-English speaking patients receiving care within the Duke Health System-.

Duties and Responsibilities of this Level

Provides a variety of services to international patients and their families temporarily residing in Duke-sponsored apartments to include facilitating residents'orientation to the community and assisting in their adjustment to social and/or cultural differences encountered; answer questions and concerns; provide general information and advise residents regarding community living issues.

Serves as primary liaison between residents, internal and external management to ensure that residents' space and facility needs are met; collect monthly payments from residents; monitor ongoing use of residential space to ensure adequate living conditions, safety and respectful community living among residents. Organizes and coordinates periodic social events and activities to foster interaction and to promote emotional adjustment and well-being within the residential community of international patients and their families.

Performs a variety of interpretation and translation services to assist non-English speaking patients in various community interactions and while receiving care within the Duke Health System; facilitate verbal and written communication between health care providers, clinical support staff and patients/visitors.-

Ensures that information communicated by Duke staff is understood by patient/family; ensure that patients' communications to Duke staff are accurate, precise and convey the intended message.

Articulates and documents information accurately to convey patient's questions, concerns and messages consistent with risk management directives; provide required documentation as identified by the International Patient Center; maintain accurate and timely documentation within the program database.

Assists the non-English speaking patient with cross-cultural orientation to understand the nuances of medical care delivery within the Duke Health System.

Provides escort services and related informational services to patients and families as required; walk or direct patients and their entourages through the system as required. Performs other related duties incidental to the work described herein.

Required Qualifications at this Level

Education

Work generally requires completion of a Bachelor's degree -to acquire appropriate communications and organizational skills.

Work requires successful completion of conversation/translation competency testing in medical interpretation.

Experience

Work requires a minimum of one-year experience in a community service or health care related field.
