General Description of the Job Class

Responsible for routine recognition, evaluation and control of safety and health hazards in the workplace. Also support these functions by performing routine tasks associated with calibration and inspection of necessary equipment. At times, will work with Duke departments to minimize occupational health and safety risks and to manage compliance with applicable regulations.

Duties and Responsibilities of this Level

Duties and Responsibilities of Level 1:

1. Perform duties in support of safety and health programs in accordance with appropriate Federal, State, local and accreditation regulations. Duties may include:

' Maintain and order inventory.

' Calibrate equipment according to schedule.

' Participate in compiling, verifying and correlating data relating to occupational and environmental health issues. ' Perform safety tests and sampling as assigned.

' Participate in safety training. ' Assist in performing safety surveys/facility inspections and audits.

2. Perform duties in support of patient care activities:

' Package, remove, monitor, transport and store radioactive waste from patient rooms.

' Prepare and decontaminate/release room of patient undergoing treatment with radioactive materials.

3. Perform duties in support of the institutional program for ordering, receipt, delivery, survey and documentation of radioactive materials.

4. Respond to hazardous material spills and other emergency situations. 5. Perform duties in support of fire prevention.

' Act as liaison with City of Durham Fire Prevention Bureau

' Participate & assist in the inspection, maintenance and testing of fire detection/suppression systems.

' Perform Interim Life Safety Measures of JCAHO areas.

' Conduct fire drills. 6. Document all work using tools provided.

Duties and Responsibilities of Level 2:

In addition to duties and responsibilities of level 1, level 2 will perform the following: 1. Perform duties in support of safety and health programs in accordance with appropriate Federal, State, local and accreditation regulations. Duties may include: ' Ensure that inventory is completed according to schedule.

' Train others in use and calibration of equipment.

' May conduct training.

' May perform some safety surveys/audits of low risk areas independently.

' Use results from sampling to evaluate personnel exposures and engineering controls

' Make recommendations related to surveys and sampling to Safety Specialist.

' Assist in segregation & separation of waste chemicals for shipment.

' Participate in treatment of chemicals for in-house waste reduction.

2. Perform duties in support of patient care activities:

' Ensure that waste from patient rooms is processed in accordance with SOPs. ' Ensure patient rooms are setup and broken down within established guidelines.

3. Oversee the activities of safety technicians performing duties in support of the institutional program for ordering, receipt, delivery, survey and documentation of radioactive materials.

4. Monitor and supervise the activities of contract personnel, students and safety technicians performing duties related to fire prevention

Required Qualifications at this Level

Education

Work requires communicative, cognitive and analytical skills normally acquired through an Associate degree in Occupational Safety, Environmental Health & Safety, Engineering, Laboratory Science or a related field.

Experience

No experience beyond AA/AS degree required for level 1.

Two years safety related experience required for level 2.

Degrees, Licensure, and/or Certification

Valid Driver's license.

Must have completed or be able to complete: First Responder-Operations Level Training (29 CFR 1910.120), Asbestos Abatement Supervisor, AHERA Asbestos Inspector for OSH Division.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Level 1

1. Basic knowledge of safety and health principles.

2. Basic math skills.

3. Functional oral and written communication skills.

4. Ability to utilize computer technology to prepare reports, access data and maintain records.

Level 2 - Above plus 1. Knowledge of federal, state and local laws and regulation relating to safety.

2. Creative problem solving to recognize and analyze needs and propose solutions to effectively address them.

3. Ability to plan and coordinate multiple diverse tasks simultaneously.
