General Description of the Job Class

Assist in the supervision and participate in the operation and maintenance of the Duke University Steam Plant systems and facilities; repair and maintain steam plant equipment and facilities.

Duties and Responsibilities of this Level

Participate in the planning and scheduling of work to ensure proper distribution of assignments.

Participate in the operation and maintenance of the Steam Plant systems and facilities ensuring the timely and adequate delivery of steam to University buildings.

Perform administrative duties including, but not limited to, record keeping, completion of timecards, attendance records and operating logs; coordinate all contracted work.

Overhaul, regulate and repair equipment such as boilers, conveyors, pumps, generators, and auxiliary equipment, using specialized testing devices and hand power tools.

Install, overhaul, calibrate, regulate, service and repair digital control systems and components, to include gauges, meters, and controls on such equipments and systems. Maintain computerized inventory of parts and tools.

Monitor a predetermined schedule of preventive maintenance, to include inspecting equipment for proper lubrication and cleaning; complete preventive maintenance records.

Test boiler water and add chemicals to maintain boiler water treatment. Assist in the preparation of reports and analyses setting forth progress, adverse trends and appropriate recommendations or conclusions. Assume the duties and responsibilities of the Steam Plant Foreman in his absence; assist in the training of lower level personnel in all phases of plant operation and maintenance.

Recommend personnel actions including, but not limited to, hiring, merit recommendation, promotions, transfers and vacation schedules.

Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein.

Required Qualifications at this Level

Education

Work requires an educational background normally equivalent to a high school education with course work in skilled crafts or trades.

Experience

Work requires a broad-based working knowledge of heating plant systems and facilities normally acquired through 5 years of experience in the operation and maintenance of heating plant systems and facilities, to include 2 years of experience in digital control repair and calibrations. OR AN EQUIVALENT COMBINATION OF RELEVANT EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE
