General Description of the Job Class

Provide effective management of highly specialized equipment typically found in radiology (cyclotron engineering expertise) or the Electrophysiology program. Work closely with physicians and staff to ensure excellence in service, training and usage of complex systems. Perform tests and evaluates performance of equipment to enhance efficiency, clinical effectiveness and patient safety.

Duties and Responsibilities of this Level

Perform a variety of technical electrical, electronic, computer, and mechanical tasks related to the installation, modification, operation, and maintenance of highly technical systems (CS-30 medical cyclotron, including its high-voltage power supplies, high vacuum system, RF systems, target systems, electrophysiology lab systems and other related equipment).

Ensures all systems are set up and functional including required interfaces. Apply high degree of mechanical aptitude and skill to troubleshoot, diagnose, and repair these systems. Perform tasks in the installation and maintenance of accelerator related systems, vacuum pumps, helium leak detectors, and cooling systems.

Read circuit diagrams and repair various electronic equipment including timing circuits, pulse generators, amplifiers, process controllers, power supplies, and many other circuits in the support of the cyclotron and its systems.

Participates and/or supervises operation of the mapping systems during cases. Assists with data acquisition and annotation during complex ablation cases. Plans and implements archival processes for the data generated.

Responsible for radiation safety equipment, security and equipment interlocks, compliance checks, and documentation in accordance Duke University and North Carolina regulatory policies. Consult with vendors, consultants, and equipment manufacturing firms to solve crisis problems, coordinate in-service education and to review new equipment and related installation and maintenance procedures.

Provide technical assistance in the design fabrication, and installation of new equipment, including the use of computer software for making technical drawings for system components and modifications.

Provide technical assistance to faculty and other researchers as requested.

Train and observe staff until certification is complete, if required.

Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein.

Required Qualifications at this Level

Education

Work requires a bachelor's degree in Engineering, Physics or Biomedical Engineering and a minimum of three years of related experience in the area of assignment;

OR

Work requires an associate's degree in electronics, mechanical engineering, biomedical engineering or related field and five or more years of related experience in the area of assignment

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Nuclear Medicine - Work requires familiarity with nuclear reactions, radiation safety, high-voltage and RF electrical systems, wide variety of mechanical systems, solid state and vacuum tube electronic devices, systems controls, pumps, motors, and high vacuum systems related to the installation, operation, and maintenance of scientific/technical equipment.
