General Description of the Job Class

Perform a variety of activities related to the transportation of patients, specimens and equipment; greet and assist patients and visitors at Duke Hospital as directed.

Duties and Responsibilities of this Level

Direct daily work of other Patient Transporters and report inadequate performance to Supervisor. Train new and existing employees and update personnel files. Follow up on complaints, providing quick fixes, and reporting them to the Supervisor.

Evaluate work requirements and assignments, ensure efficient utilization of employees and distribution of work load.

Transport patients to and from clinical, ancillary and support areas via wheelchair, stretcher or van service as requested to include tranport of patients with oxygen tanks, intravenous pumps, drips and special equipment.

Assist clinical personnel in transferring patients to or from beds, wheelchairs or stretchers as requested. Assist people in and out of vehicles and escort or transport them to and from hospital lobby; carry luggage, open doors and obtain messenger service for the transportation of people to other hospital locations.

Control flow of traffic in front of the Hospital; reroute traffic; provide information and direction to patients and visitors; contact escort service on patient's and visitor's arrival.

Approach, greet and offer assistance and direction to patients and visitors entering the hospital.

Assist in the loading and unloading of patients onto ambulances and vans during periods of PRT non-service. Perform valet parking duties as required; operate van to transport patients to outlying locations or to provide backup service for the PRT as requested.

Collect specimens, orders, requisitions and equipment and deliver items to appropriate destinations.

Assist in maintaining order and cleanliness in hospital lobby and entrance; replenish supply of information brochures in lobby and at entrances throughout the Medical Center .

Assist nursing staff with removal of expired bodies from units and transport to morgue.

Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein.

Required Qualifications at this Level

Education

Work requires the ability to follow and provide instructions to the public generally equivalent to a partial high school education. The ability to transport patients to various hospital locations is also required.

Experience

Work requires a minimum of six months experience as a Patient Transporter II and successful completion of skills training as designated by the department including, but not limited to, oxygen transport, customer service, body mechanics.
