General Description of the Job Class

Perform routine histopathological tests to obtain data for use by a physician in the diagnosis and treatment of disease.

Duties and Responsibilities of this Level

* Perform muscle biopsies, histochemical and other histopathological laboratory tests and examinations to obtain data for use in the diagnosis and treatment of disease; record determinations and results for review by physicians.

*Prepare equipment for processing, embedding, cutting, complex special staining and mounting tissue; label, record and prepare slides of tissue to the pathologist for microscopic examination and diagnosis; obtain specimens from operating rooms and record in log book; perform frozen crytostat sectioning as required.

*Set up equipment, reagents, instruments and apparatus for specific laboratory procedures.

*Make work assignments; review the work of assigned employees; assist in the training of new personnel.

*Provide technical guidance to laboratory personnel as required.

*Check the work of assigned employees to ensure that work performed meets specified quality standards.

*Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein.

Required Qualifications at this Level

Education

ASCP certification (or equivalent) as a Histology Technician

Experience

Two years experience in a histology laboratory post-certification.

Degrees, Licensure, and/or Certification

ASCP (or equivalent) as a Histology Technician or Histotechnician.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

*Demonstrated competency in histological techniques for a wide range of specimen materials. *Exhibit supervisory skills in successfully completing work assignments, training and documentation oversight, as assigned.
