General Description of the Job Class

Oversee the identification and reporting of neoplasms, collection of clinical data, coding and entry of medical information into the Tumor Registry database, performance of life-time follow-up to provide cancer incidence, treatment, and outcome information for quality improvement activities. Provide support to administration for planning and marketing programs and research activities. Coordinate registry quality control activities, information requests, quality improvement studies and research projects as requested.

Duties and Responsibilities of this Level

Identify reportable neoplasms. Review and abstract information from patient medical records (DUHS & outside records) including demographic characteristics, history of neoplasm, diagnostic procedures, final diagnosis, stage, extent of disease and treatment - Code and enter into the database: topography, morphology, treatment, stage and other required information in compliance with standards set by the American College of Surgeons, the North Carolina - Central Cancer Registry, guidelines set by the Duke Cancer Committee, and departmental standards. - Obtain on-going follow up information to include medical status, 1st recurrence, death and autopsy information from patient medical records, letters or phone calls to provide end results information - Perform clerical functions of follow up as needed. - Organize, enter and maintain patient computer data to ensure conformance to tumor registry operational standards and to meet the needs of the users of registry data. - Attend Tumor Board and Cancer Committee meetings, provide clerical assistance and maintain required records - Participate in educational activities of local, state and national Tumor Registrar association. Review reference material and current literature relative to Tumor Registry. Level II In addition to the duties described in Level I, Level II performs the following: - Independently research and solve complex coding problems. - Assists with special projects as required - Serves as supervisor, coach, and educational resource to Level I Tumor Registrars.

Required Qualifications at this Level

Education

AA degree (i.e. LPN, CRA, pharmacy tech, HIM etc.) with course-work in Medical Terminology, Anatomy & Physiology OR completion of NCRA-approved post-secondary curriculum in cancer data management/cancer registry OR equivalent on-the-job training OR >5 years experience in Tumor Registry abstracting.

Experience

3-5 years experience in Cancer Registry operations or highly-relevant clinical experience

Degrees, Licensure, and/or Certification

CTR preferred, but not initially required. If hired into this position, expectation to obtain CTR within 1 year of hire.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Data coding, Medical Terminology, Anatomy & Physiology ACoS-FORDS coding ICDO coding, Cancer Staging (AJCC, Collaborative and SEER Staging) Quality assurance background Working knowledge of Windows-based software Data entry and verification (quality control) Excellent organizational skills with good follow through. Excellent investigative/analytic skills with detail orientation. Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
