General Description of the Job Class

The incumbents assigned to this classification will be participants in an approved Internship program. The intent of our internship programs is to provide qualified young leaders both undergraduate and graduate with exposure and project experience in a formalized program in preparation for careers in healthcare administration. Participants of the program will contribute not only to the projects and departments in which they work, but to Duke Health as well. Students are presented with an opportunity to build knowledge and skills in a health care setting with organizational responsibilities ranging from planning and policy analysis to program development and implementation.

Duties and Responsibilities of this Level

Leadership from across DUHS submit potential projects for completion by selected interns. Projects change from year to year, but are intended to provide students with a specific experience in hospital management while exposing them to the broader and sometimes complex aspects of hospital administration. The specific nature of the internship will reflect the needs of the sponsoring organization, the learning goals of the student and the needs of the healthcare institution. An effort is made to establish a reasonable balance between the interns learning goals and the specific work the organization requires. Vice Presidents or other designated leadership within the Clinical Services Unit (CSU) or department will provide oversight during the internship experience. Goals and expectations will be clearly defined at the initiation of the program. Throughout the course of the internship, interns are assigned to one or more projects where they are responsible for a particular part of a deliverable(s). Through interactions with the project team, interns will receive mentorship and support to help their success on the engagement. At the end of the program, Interns have the opportunity to present their projects to senior leaders in the Health System. Potential projects will involve many different services, departments, and functions across a variety of areas. The student will also provide feedback on the internship program and the leader (s)/preceptor will provide developmental feedback to the student.
