General Description of the Job Class

Serve as a physician extender in the primary care, primary care sports medicine, and/or orthopaedic clinical setting and specialize in the delivery of high quality health care to patients of all ages and athletes of all skill levels. Promote the Duke University Health System within his/her own entity as well as through community outreach initiatives and serve as an integral part of the healthcare delivery team.

Duties and Responsibilities of this Level

Perform appropriate patient intake for a variety of medical and musculoskeletal conditions. This includes, but is not limited to, thorough history of condition or injury, chief complaint, assessment of pain level, completion and / or review of past medical history, family history social history and medication reconciliation.

Perform appropriate physical examination per patient history and chief complaint. This includes but is not limited to palpation of the affected area and unaffected area, range of motion testing, strength testing / manual muscle testing / dynamic muscle testing, myotome/dermatome testing, ligamentous stress testing, or functional testing.

At direction of supervising physician, perform appropriate point of care testing and order appropriate diagnostic testing or follow-up care.

Actively engage and participate in community outreach initiatives.

Support physicians and other clinical/ancillary staff in daily patient care.

Comply with all OSHA and JHACO-issued policies and procedures.

Document all aspects of evaluation, testing appropriately within the EMR.

Based on patient diagnosis, current activity level and patient care plan goal, collaborates with supervising physician to develop an appropriate plan of care for treatment/interventions.

Uses current best practices for concussion evaluation and management.

Collaborates with supervising physician to develop a specific concussion care plan for each patient that includes academic and physical recommendations based on clinical assessment.

Prepares for and assists physician with minor surgical procedures, including preparation of patient treatment site.

Triage patient messages, phone calls and questions appropriately.

Manage referrals to specialists and diagnostics tests in a timely manner.

Respond to problems/opportunities to improve patient care & customer service.

Serve as preceptor to undergraduate athletic training student interns work described herein.

Required Qualifications at this Level

Education

Bachelors degree in athletic training or equivalent from a CAATE accredited program required. Work requires knowledge of the domains of athletic training: injury/illness prevention and wellness protection, clinical evaluation and diagnosis, immediate and emergency care, treatment and rehabilitation, and organizational and professional health and well-being. NATABOC Certification (National Athletic Trainers Association-Board of Certification) is required.

Degrees, Licensure, and/or Certification

NCBATE licensed or eligible NATABOC certification

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Excellent written and communication skills. Must be able to work within multidisciplinary team.
