General Description of the Job Class

Assist the Ophthalmology department physician (or optometrist) and other technical support personnel in performing diagnostic tests necessary to evaluate patient eye problems. COMTs are specially trained to operate ophthalmic imaging and diagnostic equipment, perform various eye and vision evaluations, and administer medications. Some specific responsibilities include various diagnostic testing, taking ophthalmic images, and performing ultrasounds to assist with a diagnosis.

Duties and Responsibilities of this Level

In addition to the duties performed by the COT. The Certified Ophthalmic Medical Technologist will be expected to perform the following: o Perform complex photography such as b-scans and wide field imaging/ fundus photography o Able to perform sensorimotor exams to evaluate need for prism correction o Versions and ductions examination to identify any abnormalities prior to seeing physician o Perform and record exophthalmometry o Perform and record wavefront diagnostics o Measure and record fusional amplitudes o Perform and record Maddox Rod measurements o Perform and record corneal sensitivity testing

On an as needs basic perform the following roles: o Speak/Train at national meetings o Run semi-annual Vision Symposium o Write SOPs and assist HCA and clinic manager with education sessions for clinical staff o Assist clinical operations manager with onboarding new employees and obtaining competencies for diagnostic testing. o PRGF specialized programs o Telehealth consult intake for neuro-ophthalmology patients o Point person for training on new technology for clinic

Required Qualifications at this Level

Education

High School Diploma

Experience

None required above education/training requirement.

OR AN EQUIVALENT COMBINATION OF RELEVANT EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE

Degrees, Licensure, and/or Certification

Hold a current Certified Ophthalmic Medical Technologist certification overseen by the Joint Commission on Allied Health Personnel in Ophthalmology (JCAHPO).
