General Description of the Job Class

The RN OR Scheduler works closely with the Perioperative team (including, but not limited to, OR team members and leadership, Anesthesia leadership, and other Support Services) to coordinate daily OR scheduling. The position assists with managing and building the OR schedule while collaborating with surgeon offices and nurse leaders to optimize the OR schedule for efficient and safe patient flow.

Duties and Responsibilities of this Level

Completion of the first step of Universal Protocol.

Scheduling OR events and consistently analyzing schedule to maximize efficiency and productivity.

Utilizing chart reviews to verify critical elements including but not limited to: provider, location, procedure date, patient class, Case Consent Wording, ICD & CPT, laterality, positioning, anesthesia type, case classification, diagnosis codes, pre-op visit completion, and surgeon privileging confirmation.

Leading scheduling meetings to collaborate with key stakeholders and team members and influence operational excellence.

Orientation of new hires to the department.

Running reports and completing data analysis frequently to maximize schedule execution.

Using strong critical thinking, communication and nursing knowledge to ensure surgical patient safety.

Review and complete all required elements of an OR case request in accordance with physician orders and established policies and procedures.

Use professional nursing judgment to individualize the plan of care based on assessment of special needs and added comments.

Participate in own professional development by maintaining required competencies, identifying learning needs and seeking appropriate assistance or educational offerings.

Act as preceptor and support the development of other staff, including providers and their clinic staff in the scheduling and block time request process.

Participate in the identification of clinical or operational performance improvement opportunities.

Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein.

As an administrative nurse with Duke University Health System, you will make providing service your priority while prioritizing patient-centered outcomes. Utilize the nursing process (assessing, planning, implementing, and evaluating) in achieving the goals of the OR scheduling process. Participate in educational activities, departmental committees, research and/or quality improvement projects or other perioperative related projects as assigned. Adhere to all rules and regulations of all applicable local, state, and federal agencies and accrediting bodies. Actively participates in outstanding customer service and accepts responsibility in maintaining relationships that are equally respectful to all.

Required Qualifications at this Level

Education

Work requires graduation from an accredited BSN program.

Exception: Registered nurses hired after July 1, 2014 without a Bachelor's degree in Nursing (or higher) are expected to enroll in an appropriate BSN program within two years of their start date but must complete the program within five years of their start date.

Registered nurses hired before July 1, 2014 are not required to enroll in a BSN program to remain in this job classification.

Experience

Previous operating room experience required, 2+ years preferred.

Previous surgeon clinic nursing or paranesthesia experience preferred.

Degrees, Licensure, and/or Certification

Current registration with the North Carolina State Board of Nursing as a registered professional nurse OR current compact RN licensure to practice in the state of North Carolina required.

BLS (or higher) certification required.

Professional specialty certification preferred.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Knowledge of scope of the Registered Nurse, Licensed Practical Nurse, Surgical Technologist, and Advanced Practice Provider.

Knowledge of and appropriate application of the nursing process.

Knowledge of professional theory, practice, and procedure.

Ability to assess nursing needs of perioperative patients and their families.

Ability to independently seek out resources and work collaboratively.

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.

Ability to communicate clearly with patients, families, visitors, healthcare team, physicians, administrators, leadership and others.

Ability to use sensory and cognitive functions to process and prioritize information, act, and follow-up.

Ability to use fine motor skills.

Competent in BLS and/or other specialized life support requirements designated by work area.

Ability to use computer and learn new software programs.

Able to document and communicate pertinent information using computer and/or paper documentation tools.

Ability to navigate the entity.

Ability to remain focused and organized.

Working knowledge of procedures and techniques involved in the OR, including new equipment, the addition of equipment and other additional resources.

Working knowledge of infection control procedures and safety precautions.

Working knowledge and completion of appropriate Joint Commission and other regulatory requirements.

Pre-employment Physical Capacity Testing Required.
