General Description of the Job Class
The Duke Orthopaedic Athletic Training Residency Program is a 13-month, post-professional educational experience. Residents will perform a variety of duties as an Athletic Trainer in diverse orthopaedic medical practice settings and participate in structured clinical and didactic curriculums that will enhance residents' expertise in orthopaedic athletic training. Work will be performed in both clinical and administrative areas, including assisting providers with patient care and handling clerical, environmental and organization tasks. The Duke Athletic Trainer Orthopaedic Resident is a non-exempt position.
Duties and Responsibilities of this Level
Patient Care Responsibilities- Residents will serve as a physician extender in primary care, primary care sports medicine and/or orthopaedic clinical setting and specialize in the delivery of high- quality health care to patients of all ages and athletes of all skill levels. Residents will be expected to perform at the top of scope by the end of the program: to include rooming patients, collecting histories, document 1st pass HPI, charting, answering phone calls and patient messages, completing forms, patient education including Home Exercise Programs, assist in procedures, set up and maintenance of sterile fields, IM injections.
Weekly academic responsibilities to include, but not limited to, grand rounds, journal clubs, Athletic Training presentations at a local and national level, scholarship, leading group discussions, anatomy labs, preparation for BOC Orthopaedic specialty certification.
Clerical Duties- prepping clinics to include pre-charting to maximize efficiency, obtaining test results, updating charts, obtaining authorizations, including peer-to-peers, coordinating referrals and appointments.
Develop the ability to remove cast, apply splints and casts to the upper and lower extremity. Be able to coordinate DME program, to include all aspects, including fitting, pre-authorizations and knowledge of insurance requirements, and par levels and ordering.
Responsibilities that vary according to state law, which include autoclaving, checking vital signs, suture removal, dressing changes, entering orders based on physician protocols, biohazard waste.
Fulfills EOC Responsibilities- cleaning exam rooms, ordering and stocking supplies and restocking exam rooms, cleaning exam tables, maintain safe work environment by checking for expired supplies, medications, emptying sharps containers; promote adherence Compliance and Joint Commission policies.
Evaluate patients during their first post-operative visit. Residents will perform appropriate physical examination that may include palpitation of the affected and unaffected areas, range of motion testing, strength testing/manual muscle testing/dynamic muscle testing, myotome/dermatone testing, ligamentous stress testing or functional testing. A physician or APP must also be present in clinic to provide support to the ATC if needed. The note generated by the ATC will be co- signed by the MD or APP.

Required Qualifications at this Level
Education
A four-year college degree meeting the requirements of an athletic trainer. Masters preferred.
Experience
1-2 years of certified experience preferred.
Degrees, Licensure, and/or Certification
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Knowledge of health care field and medical office protocols/procedures.
Skill in supporting provider workflow tasks.
Strong interpersonal skills.
Ability to learn, project a pleasant and professional image, to prioritize and complete delegated tasks and to demonstrate compassion and care in dealing with others.
