General Description of the Job Class

Directs and is responsible for planning, coordinating and supervising all functions within the Histology area for the Pathology Department including: specimen preparation, staffing, training, scheduling, budgeting and maintaining supplies. Ensures quality services in an expeditious manner. Responsible for assuring section meets all regulatory requirements, to include but not limited to, JC, CLIA, CAP and OSHA. Communicates well with laboratory administration, other laboratory facilities, nursing service and physicians. Evaluates employees using laboratory and hospital guidelines and policies to include competency assessment. Encourages professional growth and development of staff. Performs complex histological procedures, records and analyzes data, maintains and repairs instruments. Relies on experience and judgment to perform a variety of required tasks and resolve any problems.

Required Qualifications at this Level

Education

Meets CLIA requirements for position. High school graduate, bachelor or associate degree from an accredited college or university preferred or have previously qualified as a Histology Technician or Histologist Technologist under DHHS/CLIA guidelines. Histology training through an accredited histology school preferred.

Experience

Minimum of five years experience preferred.

Degrees, Licensure, and/or Certification

Certified as a Histology Technician or Technologist, ASCP or AMT preferred.
