General Description of the Job Class

In collaboration with the Associate Chief Nursing Officer - Education, the Associate Director is responsible for the day-to- day management of the department, including personnel management and supervision. The AD leads and supports education for nursing practice and advanced practice providers in their professional development, ensuring all regulatory, accreditation and clinical competency standards are met; and identifying, measuring and evaluating clinical and departmental outcomes. Primary focus will be within the Department of Education Services, but the Assistant Director also will help coordinate and facilitate continuing education and practice standards for nurses across the Duke University Health System. In addition the Associate Director has full authority and responsibility to stand in for and represent the Associate Chief Nursing Officer, Education at his/her request or during his/her absence.

Duties and Responsibilities of this Level

Responsible for the oversight and supervision of a specified group of centralized staff educators and support staff. Specifically the Assistant Director is responsible for either the Clinical Nurse Educator (CNE), Community educators and staff support for Education Services. For the Associate Director???s identified direct reports, this includes responsibilities to:

Recruit, interview, hire, orient, coach, mentor, evaluate, and if necessary implement disciplinary action.

Approve monthly and biweekly time as required by HR.

Oversee staff development practice, including collaboration with Unit based educators and managers to ensure appropriate orientation competency standards, guidelines, and protocols related to life support, clinical practice and ongoing staff development processes. Identify and develop education outcomes and outcome measures.

Role model and ensure professional growth and development of CNE/staff educators following the core competencies in Staff Development Educator role ??? educator, consultant, facilitator, change agent, researcher and leader.

Assist the Associate Chief Nursing Officer, Education in the day-to-day operations of the department, including financial planning and management and in annual budget preparations.

Represent the Department of Education Services in negotiating business and financial contracts, including compensation agreements for split- funded employees.

Serve as an expert resource to DUHS leaders related to education requirements for competency to practice, licensing, regulatory and compliance requirements, policies and procedures, scope of practice, NC Board of Nursing, credentialing and certifications.

Collaborate with the Associate Chief Nursing Officer, Education in the development and implementation of the Education Services annual strategic plan, goals, balanced scorecard indicators and targets, and in reporting outcomes via presentations and / or written reports.

Identify and track Education Services PI/QI/ projects. Collaborate with performance improvement department / performance services department / pharmacy / Six Sigma teams and other appropriate resources to gather data in providing education related to support of PI/QI and clinical practice outcome measurements relevant to clinical practice.

Serve as a liaison with Clinical Service Units (CSU) and patient care units to anticipate and plan for educational resources to support evidence-based clinical practice, patient safety, CSU goals / outcomes, and specific hospital initiatives. Ensure appropriate CNE resources to educate and support nursing staff and professional practice.

Assess the educational needs of the department; plan, coordinate, present, facilitate, and evaluate monthly CNE educational sessions to support the continuing professional development of staff development nurses.

Provide leadership, attend and participate in DUH and DUHS meetings, task forces, retreats, etc. as a representative of the department or as requested by the director. Provide feedback and follow-up to director and / or appropriate APN team leaders / team members.

Mentor and support CNE/Staff educators in mentoring others in preparing / delivering educational presentations, initiating / conducting clinical research, writing for publication, and developing / presenting poster or podium presentation. Collaborate with the Duke University School of Nursing faculty as resources to support evidence-based outcome measurement, grant writing, clinical research, and writing for professional publication.

Facilitate educational experiences for professional nursing and healthcare students facilitating clinical contract as representative of DUH/DUHS and placement support between schools and unit of placement through contractual agreements endorsed by Duke.

Provide leadership in support of accreditation, program certification and regulatory activities of the organization, including but not limited to JCAHO, DFS, CMS, Patient Safety programs and others identified by the hospital, health system or department.

Role model staff development professional educator through conduct, appearance, communication, mutual respect & diversity, positive change, leadership, ethical decision-making, critical thinking, and problem- solving skills.

Maintain own licensure, clinical competencies and skills, and all requirements to provide evidence-based clinical practice if needed to support a specific clinical area.

Development of web-based learning modules as needed to serve clinical units

Development and implementation of technology based instruction that assists the educational process or the bedside practitioner

Provide consultative services to projects and departments requiring educational expertise in the implementation of instructional technology

Implement productivity management plan for educational offerings including development of databases for qualitative and quantitative input to the balanced score card by Education Services

Required Qualifications at this Level

Education

Bachelor's degree and Master's degree required. One of the degrees must be in Nursing.

Experience

5 years of nursing, clinical educator, or nursing instructor experience required. This must include 2 years of clinical educator or nursing instructor experience

Degrees, Licensure, and/or Certification

Current or compact RN licensure in the state of North Carolina required. BLS required. BLS, ACLS, PALS, and/or NRP Instructor level certification is preferred.

Distinguishing Characteristics of this Level

The Associate Director of Staff Education and Development must have and maintain full knowledge of all requirements of Staff development educator positions, roles, requirements of practice, competencies, certifications, regulations, and licensing. In addition the AD must be fully informed of and involved in all departmental administrative operations so that s/he may step in and provide leadership in the absence of the director. Thus the ability to provide positive leadership and maintain absolute confidentiality related to all budgetary, human resource, and operational activities are essential.
