General Description of the Job Class

Perform evaluation and treatment of adult and pediatric patients with disorders of the visual system, with an emphasis on binocular vision and eye movement difficulties. Perform strabismus evaluation including and motor testing, evaluation of fresnel and spectacle prisms, convergence exercises, and orthoptic treatment. Responsibilities include: strabismus evaluations, infant vision assessment, retinoscopy, refraction, and providing independent orthoptic treatment, as well as teaching house officers and ophthalmic technician students principles and techniques related to pediatric vision assessment and strabismus evaluations.

Duties and Responsibilities of this Level

Perform and interpret pediatric and adult patient screening examinations for physician review.

History taking skills to include: chief complaint and history of present illness, current medications and allergies, directed review of systems past medical history, and pertinent family ocular history.

Testing to include (as appropriate for each individual case): visual acuity testing (including vision assessment for infants and pediatric patients, (distance and near, with and without glasses), lensometry measurements of current glasses including prism if present), retinoscopy and manifest efraction, color vision testing, pupil and slit lamp biomicroscopy of the anterior segment, applanantion or tonopen tonometry, and confrontation visual fields.

Strabismus evaluations including sensor and motor testing, evaluation of fresnel and spectacle prisms, convergence exercises, and orthoptic treatment (performed independently, if appropriate).

Assist as needed on research projects for the development of new eye examination techniques, procedures and apparatus. Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein.

Required Qualifications at this Level

Education

Position requires bachelor's degree and certification from an accredited Orthoptic Training Program.

Experience

No work experience required. Two years of clinical experience as a Certified Clinical Orthoptist preferred.

Degrees, Licensure, and/or Certification

Must be certified by American Association of Certified Orthoptists.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Demonstrated ability to perform infant vision assessment using the Preferential Looking Test (Teller or grating acuity cards).

Demonstrated ability to perform manifest and cycloplegic refraction in children.
