General Description of the Job Class

Responsible for the oversight and coordination of patient care, including clinical and operational activities, personnel, strategic planning and fiscal activities for Perfusion Services. Develops and maintains care delivery systems and a team to meet patient care needs 24 hours a day across Duke Health. Represents the interests of Perfusion Services, Duke University Hospital (DUH) and Duke University Health System (DUHS) on clinical and operational committees and in public forums. Functions with the policies and procedures of DUH and DUHS and within the legal framework of the state.

Duties and Responsibilities of this Level

I. Job Responsibility

Plan for the delivery of safe and quality clinical care across Perfusion Services, including the pediatric and adult services and Extracorporeal Life Support (ECLS) program in collaboration with the Associate Chief Perfusionists and ECLS Program Director.

Standards:

Promote a culture of safety and quality through use of the Duke Quality System principles

Collaborate effectively with all members of the healthcare team across Duke Health and with key affiliates

Maintain a staffing plan and schedule that meets patient care and departmental needs

Effectively manage budget preparation and maintenance, in coordination with Heart Services leadership and Heart Services Finance Manager

Provide effective communication with staff and interdisciplinary team members

Serve an active role with strategic planning, including labor force management and planning inclusive of hiring, terminations and performance reviews.

Represent Perfusion Services in the capital equipment and planning process including drafting business memos and plans to support capital and growth projects.

II. Job Responsibility

Ensure competently delivered care for patients and their families Standards:

Ensure ongoing assessment and maintainenance of staff competencies through creation of a systematic process to ensure clinical competencies, alignment with regulatory requirements, and accuracy and completeness of clinical documentation

Oversee learning experiences and mentoring of new and experienced staff across the adult and pediatric perfusion teams as well as for the Associate Chiefs and ECLS Director

Utilize performance improvement data to plan for staff development and continuing education Recruit, coach and counsel in conjunction with the Associate Vice President of Heart Services and aligned with strategies and goals of Perioperative Services

Ensure coaching sessions and performance evaluations are completed for all team members

Maintain clinical skills and competency and interaction in the operative and clinical settings

III. Job Responsibility

Contribute to the professional image of Perfusion Services and Duke Heart Services

Standards:

Promote environment and behaviors supportive of quality improvement and clinical research activities

Identify opportunities for improvement, to include patient-centered outcomes, operational efficiencies, as well as fiscal accountability strategies

Implement new perfusion techniques, clinical programs and support devices and equipment to improve the delivery and safety of patient care

Facilitate change management to support Perfusion Services strategic plan and quality improvement initiatives and in support of broader Duke initiatives

Support staff development through clinical and professional activities, including conference presentations, publications, quality improvement projects, professional organization participation and team-based project management

Remain current with trends and changes in clinical practice and legislative issues through participation in professional activities and membership in professional organizations

Required Qualifications at this Level

Education

Completion of an accredited perfusion training program. Master's degree preferred, would consider minimum of a B.S. degree if candidate has significant Chief or leadership experience at like organization.

Experience

Five (5) years' experience as a Perfusionist. Prior leadership experience required.

Degrees, Licensure, and/or Certification

Certified by the American Board of Cardiovascular Perfusion

Validated for Basic Life Support and successfully complete JCAHO and other regulatory requirements within the probationary period.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Knowledge/skill demonstrated through successful performance appraisals

Influential leadership as demonstrated by abilities to successfully transition teams through change Exposure to hazardous waste and infectious materials.

Physical abilities to complete job duties and responsibilities under prescribed environmental and working conditions.
