General Description of the Job Class

Perform technical and supervisory duties in the Radiation Therapy department, enforcing departmental rules and regulations and ensuring that department procedures and protocols are carried out.

Duties and Responsibilities of this Level

Participate in the development of the clinical areas' strategic and operational plans

Actively support and promote a professional practice model that encourages staff participation in the development of clinical standards that is collaborative, collegial, and utilizes current trends and data in professional practice both clinical and administrative. Openly support and consistently communicate the mission of the department/CSU and the organization. Serve as the staff and patient advocate to ensure optimal patient care. Advise and direct other therapists in new or difficult procedures.

Serve as a professional role model and mentor to staff by responding positively to change while supporting colleagues through the change process. Serve as a change agent to facilitate communication and transition that supports the mission of the organization.

Manage, supervise, and coordinate delivery of patient care for assigned patient care area on a 24 hour basis. Ensure compliance with clinical patient care standards and established policies and procedures.

Recognize the signs and symptoms of developing complications during treatment and know when to withhold treatment until the patient is seen by the Radiation Oncologist.

Check all charts of patients under treatment at regular intervals to eliminate dosage errors, arithmetical errors, or errors of intention. Ensure that blood counts are satisfactory and recorded. Maintain clinical competencies for assigned clinical area and provide treatment as needed. Maintain required unit records, reports, and statistics for administrative purposes, ensure compliance with established hospital policies, procedures, objectives, PI(Performance Improvement), safety, environmental and infection control. Communicate requirements to staff and hold staff accountable to established requirements.

Plan, schedule, and organize work for group ensuring proper distribution and delegation of assignments and efficient utilization of personnel, space, and facilities; overall accountability for the requisition, care, and maintenance of unit inventory, equipment, and supplies.

Oversee various personnel actions including, hiring, performance appraisals, disciplinary actions, terminations, and other related activities. Orient new staff members and provide the link between therapists and administration for all personnel problems. Collaborate with the Director of Clinical Operations to determine fiscal requirements of the clinical operations and assist in preparing budgetary recommendations. Develop action plans in conjunction with the Director of Clinical Operations to ensure budget and resource efficiency and satisfaction with patient care delivery.

Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein.

Required Qualifications at this Level

Education

Satisfactory completion of a 24 month course in radiology technology and a 12 month course in radiation therapy technology; or

Satisfactory completion of a 24- month course in radiation therapy technology; or

Registered nurse who has satisfactorily completed a 12-month course in radiation

therapy technology; or

Satisfactory completion of a Bachelor of Science degree in radiation therapy.

Experience

Five years experience as a Radiation Therapist, including one year of supervisory experience.

Degrees, Licensure, and/or Certification

Current licensure as required by state or national authority and/or certification or board eligible in Radiation Therapy by the American Registry of Radiologic Technology.

Maintain ARRT certification in radiation therapy with a minimum of documented 12 hours of continuing education.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Knowledge in principles, practices and procedures involved in the operation of ionizing radiographic and radiation therapy equipment.

Knowledge of the human anatomy and proper positioning of the patient to provide treatment as prescribed.

Working knowledge of procedures employed with Radiation Hazards, Material Safety Data Sheets and their application. Ability to administer CPR in a medical emergency.

Ability to establish and maintain an effective working relationship with patients, physicians, technologists, support personnel and other employees.
