General Description of the Job Class

Supervise personnel engaged in the environmental, health and safety functions within the Institution with responsibility for the day-to-day operations of a division. Ensure compliance with all applicable local, state and federal laws, regulations and standards concerning safety and health, as well as applicable standards set forth by the Joint Commission.

Duties and Responsibilities of this Level

Under consultative direction supervise personnel engaged in the environmental, health and safety (EH&S) functions within the Institution.

Supervise various personnel functions including, but not limited to hiring, performance appraisals, and promotions and transfers.

Plan and schedule work for the unit ensuring proper distribution of assignments to meet division goals.

Implement policies and procedures to assure awareness of and compliance with EH&S requirements of the organization. Responsible for supervising personnel engaged in monitoring and preventing chemical; biological, radiological and physical hazards present throughout the work sites.

Provide technical leadership and functional guidance to operating unit personnel to ensure all applicable standards are being enforced.

Develop staff to foster enhanced productivity and efficiency.

Ensure that quality control procedures are executed to monitor all aspects of regulations.

Coordinate audits of health and safety programs within the organization to identify and control significant loss producing exposure.

Keep informed on all existing and proposed changes in EH&S regulations.

Develop and conducts basic EH&S training to employees.

Promote communication programs to enhance and encourage employee awareness of EH&S compliance.

Act as the lead on medium to large projects or oversee specific EH&S programs.

Serve as a technical consultant to departments in matters related to EH&S.

Required Qualifications at this Level

Education

BS degree in Environmental or Safety Engineering, a biological or physical science or related field. MS preferred.

Experience

Five years related experience of which at least three years must include supervisory/management experience. An MS degree may be substituted for experience.

Degrees, Licensure, and/or Certification

Eligibility for professional certification as determined by OESO

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Proven knowledge of all federal, state and local laws/regulations pertaining to a specific area of EH&S.

Must possess good organizational and personnel management skills. Ability to utilize computer technology to access data, maintains records, and generates reports.

Ability to interface Duke faculty and staff at all levels.

Excellent verbal and oral communication skills.

Possesses and applies broad knowledge of theories, principles and techniques in a specific field of EH&S, plus working knowledge of related disciplines.

Exercises judgment within generally defined policies in selecting methods and techniques for obtaining solutions.

Works under consultative direction toward predetermined goals and objectives.

Determines need, designs and coordinates major projects.
