General Description of the Job Class

Coordinate inpatient and outpatient services provided by the Duke University Department of Psychiatry for child or adult programs; promote access to referral sources within the Department and facilitate the disposition of treatment decisions as appropriate.

Duties and Responsibilities of this Level

Coordinate and facilitate client admissions, transfers and discharges to inpatient psychiatric services; recommend client referrals to outpatient services and departmentally-sponsored research programs as appropriate.

Assess, review and monitor each client's insurance coverage and advise physicians appropriately; obtain pre-certification verification as appropriate; ensure that treatment decisions serve the purposes of quality assurance and cost containment with minimum utilization of physicians' time and effort; optimize utilization of departmental resources and services.

Monitor, track and update information about available beds, anticipated admissions, pending transfers and discharges, status of inpatient units and availability of outpatient treatment options within the Duke University Department of Psychiatry; maintain ongoing census and waiting lists for inpatient units.

Stay abreast of new and ongoing research programs within the Department of Psychiatry; coordinate and facilitate appropriate referrals of clients to these programs.

Interface with physicians, nurses, social workers, referring practitioners and clients' families to discuss clients' progress and treatment status and/or the nature of services suggested or provided.

Maintain external liaison with community and professional referral sources to meet clients' needs and to promote services provided by the department; participate in area activities related to mental health and/or psychiatric care; represent department to health care providers in the community.

Compile and keep records for information concerning services rendered to be used for program evaluation.

Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein.

Required Qualifications at this Level

Education

Work requires a Bachelor's degree in Social Work (MSW), Nursing (BSN), Counseling, Psychology or a related field to acquire appropriate knowledge of psychiatric illness.

Experience

Work requires two years of experience in social work, psychiatric nursing, or a related human service field OR two years of experience in utilization review, quality assurance, or coordination of clinical services OR any equivalent combination of the two.

A Master's degree in Social Work (MSW), Nursing, Counseling, Psychology, Business, Health Administration or related field may be substituted for two years experience.
