General Description of the Job Class

Provide leadership in the creation and implementation of major communication initiatives in support of Duke University Hospital's patient care, education, research and service missions; oversee and implement external and internal communications; consult on media relations, design and development of communications initiatives, materials and planning.

Duties and Responsibilities of this Level

Develop, direct and implement communications strategies for Duke University Hospital.

Plan and implement strategies, policies, procedures and programs for all areas/phases of communication at Duke University Hospital.

Direct and supervise the operation of a unit dedicated to planning and implementing effective communications strategies at Duke University Hospital.

Direct the creative and production aspects of all audio, video and written forms of communication. Develop and coordinate the production and dissemination of information pertinent to Duke University Hospital leadership and staff in various media.

Coordinate the preparation of news releases associated with the development of communications strategies.

Represent Duke University Hospital communication strategies with Duke University Health System and University corporate communication leaders.

Provide communication leadership with local media and hospital leaders during severe weather and emergency events.

Plan and provide counsel and coaching to Duke University Hospital executives, management and staff on effective use of communications. Recommend courses of action to Duke University Hospital leaders for improving communication strategies.

Negotiate and prepare proposals for new communications-related projects.

Act as liaison, on occasion, between Duke University Hospital and local government and community leaders.

Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein.

Required Qualifications at this Level

Education

Work requires communication, analytical and organizational skills generally acquired through completion of a bachelor's degree program in Journalism, Communications, English or a related discipline.

Experience

Work requires six years experience in writing, public relations, communications or a related discipline to include a minimum of two years experience in the health care field.
