General Description of the Job Class

Exercise leadership responsibility over the practice of Nursing at Duke University Hospital, Duke Regional Hospital or Duke Raleigh Hospital as a member of the hospital executive team.

Duties and Responsibilities of this Level

Exercise leadership responsibility over the practice of Nursing at Duke University Hospital, Duke Regional Hospital or Duke Raleigh Hospital as a member of the hospital executive team to ensure consistency in practice standards and to facilitate an interdisciplinary team approach to the delivery of care. Develop and articulate the vision and strategic direction for the practice of Nursing; collaborate on the implementation of strategies. Direct the development of strategies to promote the recruitment, retention and recognition of excellence in Nursing. Participate in the planning, implementation and evaluation of clinical programs and services; advise the Chief Operating Officer, medical staff and others concerning implications of decisions and impact on the quality of patient care, nursing practice and nursing care providers. Promote and facilitate a multidisciplinary approach to patient care and coordination of care among disciplines; ensure that patient care delivery models and standards of nursing practice are consistent with current professional standards and with the mission, vision and values of the organization. Provide leadership in the establishment of credentialing privileges and policies for nurses; ensure compliance with all applicable standards and requirements of the JCAHO, the North Carolina Board of Nursing and all other applicable regulatory agencies. Direct the determination of fiscal requirements of assigned departments and review budgetary recommendations; monitor the expenditure of budgeted funds. Coordinate, through accountable management personnel, the establishment of major schedules, task assignments and allocation of manpower and equipment to ensure conformance with specified objectives and policies. Direct various personnel functions including, but not limited to, hiring, merit recommendations, promotions, transfers and vacation schedules. Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein.

Required Qualifications at this Level

Education

Doctorate required. BSN or MSN required.

Candidates enrolled in a doctoral program will be considered; however, completion of a doctorate is a condition of continued employment. Completion of a doctoral program will be required within three years of initial date of hire.

Experience

Ten years of nursing experience is required with at least 7 years of experience in a nursing leadership role.

Degrees, Licensure, and/or Certification

Must have current or compact RN licensure in the state of North Carolina.

Nurses hired into leadership positions must obtain a nursing leadership certification within one year of hire.
