General Description of the Job Class

Assist the President of Duke University Hospital in directing and coordinating aspects of the business and operational activities of hospital as assigned or delegated by the President. As a member of the senior management team, this position is responsible for the direction and oversight of the clinical departments of Perioperative Services, Medical/Surgical and Critical Care, Emergency Services, Facility Services, Patient Flow and Diagnostic Services. Develop and foster effective collaboration between clinical and academic departments, divisions, medical staff leadership, faculty and other affiliated services (inside and outside of the hospitals) to ensure an integrated approach to providing services, and fulfilling the hospital's clinical, research and educational goals and objectives.

Duties and Responsibilities of this Level

The COO will be accountable for the overall success of the areas of assigned responsibility. This position will lead and oversee the development of division operating and strategic plans. Attention is to be given to patient satisfaction, systems improvement, program development, quality and safety, fiscal management, compliance and clinical management measures, physician relationships, outreach strategies, work culture enhancement and internal communication and consensus-building. This position will ensure that Duke's disparate resources are focused on optimally satisfying the health care needs of those we serve.

Provide administrative direction to direct reports by applying specialized and technical knowledge in the implementation and execution of the planned programs while ensuring the strategic direction of DUHS is followed. Coordinate the determinations of fiscal requirements of assigned departments and review budgetary recommendations; monitor, verify and reconcile expenditure of budgeted funds. Develop new business strategies to enhance market share and improve overall performance.

Interpret and recommend appropriate action steps to take place as a result of reports and analyses setting forth progress, adverse trends and appropriate recommendations or conclusions prepared by an Assistant Vice President or Vice President.

Serve as a preceptor and lecturer for graduate hospital administration students.

Required Qualifications at this Level

Education

Work requires a master's degree or equivalent experience

Experience

Work requires a minimum of 12 years of experience in responsible hospital operations including at least seven years at the administrative leadership level

Strong financial/analytical skills, verbal/written communication skills, problem identification and resolution skills, decision-making ability, and the ability to develop/mentor management team.

Strong operational skills; ability to recognize workflow problems and redesign new process/workflow and create buy-in from all customers on change; and the ability to initiate and manage change.

Strong negotiation skills.

Active in community and professional organizations.

Ability to build alliances: demonstrates honesty, integrity, and follow through on commitments, anticipates internal/external customer needs and meets expectations, strives for collaboration, supports others and team results, ability to manage different perspectives and find win-win solutions.Recent hospital experience with direct responsibility for cost/revue centers, experience designing business plans, and experience in an large complex academic medical center is preferred. Demonstrated leadership and complex organizational management skills.

Well-developed planning, marketing, organizational development and business skills.

Experience in healthcare administration in a large and complex setting.

The ability to work with physicians, staff and professionals in multiple settings and locations and to promote diversity in the workplace.
