General Description of the Job Class

Assist the Director of the Occupational and Environmental Safety Office by providing administrative and technical expertise, leadership, direction and program coordination for divisions, programs and activities within the Occupational and Environmental Safety Office.

Duties and Responsibilities of this Level

Assist the Director OESO in developing and implementing the overall departmental strategic plan. Accountable for developing and implementing policies, procedures, and systems related to the occupational safety and health programs.

Review and analyze departmental organizational and operational responsibilities and needs; develop and implement strategies to enhance efficiency and effectiveness of OESO.

Coordinate and support interdivisional programs and shared resources within OESO. Maintain up-to-date knowledge and understanding of new or anticipated regulations or compliance interpretations that may affect OESO. Prepare analyses and strategies for review by the Director and other senior management.

Provide strategic oversight to the OESO administrative processes including budget, contract relationships, capital planning, and personnel management.

Maintain liaison with all level of administration and outside organizations to coordinate departmental business, accomplish directives and facilitate the resolution of problems.

Establishes performance goals and measures to evaluate success of assigned area of responsibility.

Represent Director in meetings, conferences and other affairs of an administrative nature.

Performs other duties as assigned by the Director.

Required Qualifications at this Level

Education

M.S. in biology, environmental health and safety, or other science related field relevent to the function of the specific division. Doctorate level degree preferred.

Experience

7 years of progressive experience in safety, industrial hygiene, or environmental management or other related field. Supervisory experience preferred.

Degrees, Licensure, and/or Certification

Professional certification preferred.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Knowledge of federal, state and local laws and regulations pertaining to occupational safety and health, environmental management, and hazardous materials management.

Knowledge of federal, state and local laws and regulations pertaining to management of biological hazards.

Ability to communicate clearly, both verbally and in writing, to a variety of occupational and educational levels.

Ability to direct, manage, motivate, lead, and negotiate with a diverse population and multifunctional teams.

Excellent problem solving skills with the ability to respond rapidly to changing situations. Public speaking is a required skill.

Ability to organize and prioritize projects and tasks, be able to take initiative and work independently without supervision.
