General Description of the Job Class
This position has responsibility for directing one of the specialized Divisions within the Occupational and Environmental Safety Office (OESO). These Divisions rely on the principles of risk recognition, prevention, control and monitoring to minimize exposures of faculty, staff, students, and visitors to environmental, health and safety hazards.
The Division Director, OESO develops and oversees proactive programs that are implemented proficiently and in a timely manner for the widely diverse occupational environments of a health system, research facilities, and the university.
Duties and Responsibilities of this Level
Lead the respective Division which is responsible for Duke University, Duke University Health System, Medical Center, and affiliated clinics.
Plan and direct the occupational safety and health functions under direction from the Assistant Vice President, OESO. Accountable for developing and implementing policies, procedures, and systems related to the occupational safety and health programs.
Ensure that the organization is compliant with all appropriate Federal, State, and local regulations, standards, and accreditation requirements such as TJC, CMS, OSHA, EPA, DOE, DOT, and NRC. Communicate with University and Health System senior management regarding the policies and procedures for assuring compliance.
Maintain up-to-date knowledge and understanding of new or anticipated regulations or compliance interpretations that may affect OESO. Prepare analyses and strategies for review by senior management.
Review planned expansion, modifications, or closures of facilities that affect the related field.
Provide leadership and direction to management, professional, and technical personnel for the respective division. Identify personnel, institutional and material resources needed to accomplish objectives. Provide input to the annual budgetary requirements for the respective division. Develop subordinate staff to foster enhanced productivity and efficiency.
Establish, maintain cooperative relations, work effectively as a member of a team, and communicate effectively with other Duke organizational units. Serve as consultant to the safety committees in other Duke departments. Provide input and support to committee actions.
Required Qualifications at this Level
Education
Bachelor's degree in biology, environmental health and safety, environmental sciences, physics, health physics, medical physics, laboratory science, industrial hygiene, fire science or other science related field relevant to the function of the specific division. Advanced degree preferred.
Master's level degree required for Biological Safety and Radiation Safety Divisions. Doctorate degree preferred.
Experience
5 years of progressive experience in specialty or related field. Supervisory experience required.
Degrees, Licensure, and/or Certification
Professional certification is strongly preferred for some OESO Divisions.
Community Hospital and Clinic Safety, Laboratory Safety, Occupational Hygiene and Safety: CIH Board for Global EHS Credentialing, CSP Board of Certified Safety Professionals
Biological Safety: CBSP American Biological Safety Association
Radiation Safety: DABMP American Board of Medical Physics, DABSNM American Board of Science in Nuclear Medicine, DABR American Board of Radiology, CHP American Board of Health Physics, CLSO/CMLSO Board of Laser Safety
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
In-depth knowledge of the appropriate specialty.
Knowledge of federal, state and local laws and regulations relevant to the function of the specific division.
Thorough knowledge of research equipment, protocols and procedures.
Knowledge of laboratory operations sufficient to supervise complex, potentially dangerous experiments.
Ability to use computer technology to manage data, maintain records, and generate reports.
Excellent oral and written communication skills.
Ability to plan and coordinate multiple diverse tasks simultaneously.
Organizational and personnel management skills.
