General Description of the Job Class

Direct and coordinate activities of the Risk Management staff to ensure optimum preventive risk management programs.

Duties and Responsibilities of this Level

Develop preventive risk management programs pertaining to informed consent, occurrence screening, claims resolution and medical records turn-around time to ensure optimum avoidance of the risk of liability.

Conduct research to evaluate liability exposure; develop and/or implement programs designed to limit liability exposure.

Act as liaison to the Legal Counsel Office for evaluating legal claims and for setting claims reserves.

Determine and recommend appropriate reserve levels for University self- insurance vehicle; ensure adequate financial coverage to support resolution of claims.

Authorize financial settlement of claims within limits prescribed by University Counsel and the Board of Trustees.

Prepare and present statistical reports on requested subjects to senior administration as appropriate.

Participate on committees as the representative of Risk Management.

Attend national and local conferences to keep abreast of national trends in determining institutional priorities.

Determine fiscal requirements and prepare budgetary recommendations; monitor, verify and verify expenditures of budgeted funds.

Manage various personnel functions including, but not limited to, hiring, performance appraisal, promotions, transfers and vacation schedules.

Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein.

Required Qualifications at this Level

Education

Work normally requires a Master's degree in Business Administration, Hospital Administration, Law or a closely related field.

Experience

Work requires a minimum of five years progressively responsible experience in risk management, to include budgeting, staffing and supervision of personnel. Prior experience must include negotiation of settlements and projection of insurance reserves.
