General Description of the Job Class

The CPO is a key senior leader for DUHS. This position provides pharmacy leadership across the health system and is responsible for the successful achievement of strategic institutional and health system goals and objectives, optimizing resources and maintaining compliance with all regulatory bodies. The CPO provides leadership and direction to the organization and pharmacy staff through personnel performance, coordination, oversight and/r delegation.

Duties and Responsibilities of this Level

The Chief Pharmacy Officer (CPO), DUHS will provide fiscal and strategic leadership and management of the Department of Pharmacy Services at DUH and lead DUHS in the provision of contemporary pharmacy services to inpatients and outpatients through highly reliable, safe and efficient medication use systems, direct patient care services, collaboration with other healthcare providers, and education of health science school students and other trainees across the continuum of care. In directing health system pharmacy services, the Chief Pharmacy Officer will:

??? Develop and implement a strategic vision for pharmacy services.

??? Oversee the pharmaceutical contracting, procurement, receiving, security, inventory control and distribution processes.

??? Develop a budget and monitor financial performance.

??? Recruit, retain and develop a highly-skilled professional staff and ensure staffing meets patient care needs.

??? Oversee the design, implementation and management of a safe and effective medication use system.

??? Set and achieve targets to drive continuous assessment and improvement in the quality of care and services provided.

??? Collaborate with the local Colleges of Pharmacy to support and advance the academic mission of DUHS.

??? Collaborate and partner with the medical and nursing staffs in a multidisciplinary manner.

??? Stay clinically relevant and well-informed with the latest drugs.

??? Participate actively in local, state and national professional associations.

??? Ensure compliance with all local, state and national regulatory bodies.

??? Oversee and ensure systems for the safe and secure storage and distribution of controlled substances.

Required Qualifications at this Level

Education

Pharm.D., Ph.D. or equivalent professional degree in Pharmacy.

Experience

A minimum of ten years of senior health system pharmacy leadership experience in progressive academic medical center or complex health system is required.

Degrees, Licensure, and/or Certification

Eligible for licensure in the State of North Carolina
