General Description of the Job Class

Supervise, coordinate and participate in the strategic and conceptual development of major projects and publications involving creative writing and related communications in support of institutional and service line strategies of Duke University Medical Center and Health System; serve as editor-in-chief of at least one ongoing major publication.

Duties and Responsibilities of this Level

Supervise, coordinate and participate in the strategic and conceptual development of major projects and publications involving creative writing and related communications in support of institutional and service line strategies of Duke University Medical Center and Health System.

Consult with clients to develop communications strategies that support identified marketing goals; identify needs, objectives and design approaches; develop schedules and budgets as required for each project.

Serve as editor-in-chief of one ongoing major publication; manage development and production; make story asignments; direct photography and artwork; track specific budget; assume full responsibility for copy editing and proofreading; cover the publication on press as necessary; devise and codify standard operating procedures.

Develop and maintain professional contacts and affiliations with media, production and related resurces to complete projects effectively and to facilitate and promote the dissemination of news and publicity about the University.

Develop and maintain working relationships with administrators and clinical staff within an assigned area; consult with administrators and clinical staff to ??publicize and promote service lines.

Prepare budgetary recommendations; monitor expediture of budgeted funds; identify and hire freelance writing talent as needed.

Monitor and analyze programs and activities at Duke University Medical Center; develop appropriate strategies for communicating information to appropriate target audiences.

Assist in planning and coordinating a proactive information services program for Duke University Medical Center and Health System.

Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein.

Required Qualifications at this Level

Education

Work requires the ability to perform creative writing and related activities such as conducting interviews and research, and copy editing normally acquired through attainment of a bachelor's degree in Journalism, English or a related discipline.

Experience

Work requires four years of directly related writing experience in writing and editing on assignment under deadlines.
