General Description of the Job Class

Develops and coordinates volunteer programs for the entity. Plans, coordinates, implements and monitors a variety of staff and volunteer orientation and in-service education activities designed to meet identified needs and to ensure compliance with regulations, policies and objectives. Participates as a member of leadership team and serves on committees as assigned.

Duties and Responsibilities of this Level

Coordinate the development of recommended goals and objectives for a variety of volunteer programs that may include patient care, inpatient facilities, bereavement, administrative, development and special programs; develop, recommend and implement policies and procedures for the volunteer programs in conjunction with program committees.

Responsible for recruitment of volunteers; maintaining centralized information on individual programs and providing information as requested; develop and maintain database of volunteer programs to include, but not limited to, hours worked, types of services provided and status of individual programs.

Develop and implement standard orientation, training, placement, continuing education, evaluation and recognition programs for volunteers in conjunction with program committees to include volunteer handbooks, video presentations and related training materials.

Stay abreast of legal and regulatory requirements related to volunteer services; evaluate activities of individual programs and ensure potential liabilities resulting from volunteer activities are minimal.

Prepares reports and analyses reflecting progress, adverse trends and appropriate recommendations or conclusions.

Processes and maintains personnel files on volunteers in compliance with regulations.

Coordinates volunteer in-service programs by consulting with volunteers to identify and evaluate specific needs. Designs and conducts volunteer surveys regarding training needs; designs and presents educational modules where appropriate; provides resources and advice in developing training modules; evaluates effectiveness of in-service and training programs.

Is a member of the IDT and when possible attends all IDT meetings or assigns volunteer specialist to attend. Interacts with clinical staff on behalf of the volunteers and assumes responsibility for confronting difficulties with individuals and/or expectations to ensure that volunteers are suitable for an assignment in the hospice patient/family setting, inpatient setting, administrative setting or within non-hospice programs.

Oversees the documentation of the volunteer activities with patients and compiles reports from established records as needed to meet quality assurance standards and/or statistical reports for the agency-at-large as well as all other volunteer activities.

Keeps abreast of new issues involving the use of patient care volunteers, i.e., in terms of risk management, special populations, and other issues as they pertain to health care.

Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein.

Required Qualifications at this Level

Education

Work requires a Bachelor's degree in a related field to acquire communicative, interpersonal, and analytical skills.

Experience

Work requires a minimum of two years experience in patient service/health care or a related human services field (e.g. teaching, training, employee relations, public relations, counseling, or volunteer services).

A minimum of two years of experience in supervision is strongly preferred.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Working knowledge of MS Word and Spreadsheets.

Working knowledge of Hospice Medicare Conditions of Participation related to volunteers.

Ability to communicate with various types of medical professionals.

Ability to operate a computer and other office equipment.

Ability to organize and set priorities.

Ability to delegate.

Ability to deal tactfully and courteously with the public.
