General Description of the Job Class

Performs managerialwork assisting in the operation of the Engineering Services Department.

Duties and Responsibilities of this Level

Supervises a large group of skilled trades personnel involved in the building, renovation, and maintenance of corporation properties.

Interviews and makes recommendations in the hiring of all engineering employees and resolves disciplinary matters concerning these employees.

Coordinates and monitors various minor construction projects throughout the Hospital. Prepares specifications for materials needed and coordinates the ordering of materials. Confers with outside contractors as well as in-house personnel. Ensures scheduling of appropriate personnel such that the project continues on schedule.

Confers with the Director in preparing specifications for materials needed for major construction projects.

Assists the Director in preparing budget estimates for materials, equipment, supplies, personnel, and funds needed to operate the department.

Observes, inspects, and evaluates the work of subordinate personnel.

Assumes responsibility for supervision of the Engineering Department in the absence of the Director.

Prepares operational reports and analyses setting forth progress, adverse trends, and appropriate recommendations or conclusions.

Coordinates resolution of special construction problems and assists in determining priorities for changes during designated construction or renovation.

Participates in Continuous Quality Improvement activities as needed/required.

Performs related duties as required.

Required Qualifications at this Level

Education

High school diploma

Experience

Bachelors degree in mechanical or electrical engineering, with a minimum of five years experience in a hospital environment (if experience is not in a hospital setting, than 10 years of experience is required;

OR

High school graduate with ten years hospital engineering experience, at least five of which were in a supervisory position, and a license in a related trade;

OR

High school graduate with fifteen years supervisory experience in multiple trades related to hospital engineering, and a license in one of these.

Degrees, Licensure, and/or Certification

Licensed in a related trade (i.e. carpentry, electrical, painting, plumbing) or Certified Healthcare Engineer CHE, or Certified Healthcare Facilities Manager CHFM.

Must have valid N. C. drivers license and good driving record. Drives corporate vehicle approximately 2% during work week. Drives personal vehicle approximately 5% during work week.

May be required to obtain a valid health card issued by DRH in accordance with Durham County Health Department.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Thorough knowledge of the methods, techniques, materials, and equipment used in the carpentry, plumbing, painting, and electrical trades.

Considerable knowledge of the methods, techniques, materials, and equipment used in the HVAC trade, power plant operation, biomedical- electronics, telecommunications, mechanical repair, and grounds operations.

Considerable knowledge of the physical layout of all DRH properties.

Considerable knowledge of state and local codes and JCAHO standards.

Considerable knowledge of the hazards and applicable safety precautions of engineering trades.

Ability to read and interpret blueprints.

Ability to plan work methods, coordinate, and direct the work of a large crew of skilled and semiskilled workers.

Ability to prepare accurate records and reports.

Ability to maintain an effective working relationship with outside contractors and vendors and with other employees.

Ability to read, comprehend and follow oral and written instructions.
