General Description of the Job Class

Manage, supervise and coordinate operational activities within Sterile Processing to include the decontamination, sterilization, assembly, storage and distribution of medical and surgical supplies and equipment used in the care and treatment of patients.

Duties and Responsibilities of this Level

Manage, supervise and coordinate daily operations within Sterile Processing to include the decontamination, sterilization, assembly, storage and distribution of medical and surgical supplies and equipment used in the care and treatment of patients.

Assist in the development and modification of production and packaging techniques to ensure methods that are cost effective and consistent with quality assurance criteria.

Manage daily activities related to the receiving, decontamination, filling and distribution of case carts used for surgical procedures; ensure that carts are filled, checked and sealed according to established procedures; authorize minor additions and modifications to ward trays as appropriate on a daily basis; resolve problems related to outages, missing instruments or supplies.

Maintain liaison with medical and nursing personnel regarding changes in service and/or special needs; recommend ordering of new equipment and replacing of obsolete or damaged items.

Plan and schedule work for the first shift ensuring proper distribution of assignments and adequate manning, space and facilities for subsequent performance of duties; proof work schedules for second and their shifts; maintain on-call system to adjust staffing levels to meet daily needs; authorize over-time for all shifts.

Assist in the determination of fiscal requirements and preparation of budgetary recommendations.

Supervise various personnel actions including, but not limited to, hiring, performance appraisals, promotions, disciplinary actions and vacation schedules.

Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein.

Required Qualifications at this Level

Education

Work requires communication, analytical and organizational skills generally acquired through a high school education.

Experience

Work requires 5 years of experience in a sterile processing, operating rooms or related setting, including at least 2 years in a supervisory capacity, to acquire knowledge of decontamination and sterilization techniques, case cart systems and medical/surgical supplies and equipment.

Degrees, Licensure, and/or Certification

An associate's degree in an allied health field (e.g. Licensed Practical Nurse, Surgical Technician, etc.) may be substituted for two years of required experience.

OR AN EQUIVALENT COMBINATION OF RELEVANT EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE
