General Description of the Job Class

In compliance with Duke HomeCare & Hospice philosophy, goals, policies, mission and vision, the Manager of Duke Hospice Bereavement Services is responsible for the provision of quality hospice bereavement services, operational effectiveness and efficiency of the delivery of bereavement care. This responsibility includes overall management responsibility for the operation hospice bereavement services including program planning, revenue generation, problem resolution, personnel management and performance improvement. The DHBS Manager coordinates bereavement services for Duke Hospice Services and outreach into the identified coverage area and is accountable for the overall management of the Bereavement Center and oversight of the Meadowlands Campus.

Duties and Responsibilities of this Level

Administration:

1. Leads an effective bereavement team including bereavement staff (full, part-time and PRN), hospice bereavement volunteers. Mentors and leads through an interactive and motivational style which emphasizes individual strengths, defines vision in alignment with organization and health system goals. Creates a culture of responsibility and accountability and facilitates the development of a highly functioning team.

2. Seeks input from the hospice interdisciplinary team to build a positive and mutually supportive relationship which encourages the alignment of goals in providing excellent hospice patient care and excellent bereavement support for survivors.

3. Directs departmental tasks and delegates authority/responsibility to meet operational goals.

4. Informs Hospice Director (Executive Director) of departmental needs and accomplishments.

5. Ensures that operational reports are delivered within the established time frames.

6. Participates in certification, accreditation and audit procedures.

7. Responsible for oversight of the Performance Improvement Program for bereavement services.

8. Performs other administrative tasks as determined by the Hospice Director (Executive Director).

9. Maintains a strong and positive presence in the community actively engages in building and maintaining relationships with community members.

10. Oversight of the delivery of care within the Community Bereavement Service line:

a. Community client intake and assessment

b. Development and scheduling of professional workshops and in-servcies

c. Development of a referral base which includes community professionals in the mental health field

d. Participation in community based grief and bereavement initiatives

Financial:

1. Monitors on-going revenue and expenses for the bereavement department.

2. Submits financial data as required.

3. Works collaboratively with other members of the hospice leadership team and senior leaders in providing cost effective and efficient operations.

4. Works collaboratively with Director of Development to identify potential donor resources, secure grants for funding, develop opportunities for charitable giving through programming such as Lights of Remembrance.

5. Works collaboratively with staff reporting to Director of Business Development to ensure participation in community based events, health system activities and business development opportunities.

Personnel:

1. Ensures the supervision of timely and competent provision of

a. Bereavement client intake and assessment

b. Development and revision of client care planning

c. Completion of all required clinical documentation

d. Development of Grief Support Groups, Client Workshops, Professional In-Services, Hospice Staff Support, Pediatric Grief Support Services, Community collaboration, Public Speaking, Volunteer Training, Memorial Services.

2. Oversee the appropriate hiring of staff

3. Ensure that orientation, staff training and development programs are in place and provided to all staff

4. Ensure systematic evaluation of staff performance

5. Ensure personnel policies and procedures are followed and monitored

Planning

1. Develops and implements annual department volume statistics

2. Identifies and implements new programs to meet the needs of a diversifying client population

3. Ensure collaboration with hospice interdisciplinary group to assure the integration/coordination of bereavement support in providing day to day hospice patient care

Clinical & Quality

1. Identifies performance that does not meet expectations; creates programs of continuous quality improvement, employs quality improvement models and systems of measure that move performance to goal expectation.

2. Proactively evaluates performance against policies and regulations to ensure quality performance and readiness for review/examination by regulatory or accreditation bodies.

3. Promotes expectation that Customer/Patient Satisfaction is equated with excellent customer/patient care and that the delivery of excellent care along the continuum of services available to DHCH clients is the responsibility of each individual staff member.

4. Monitors and measures bereavement satisfaction and develops performance improvement measures to meet and exceed client expectations.

5. Provides direct client contact through the provision of bereavement support and education with a limited case load and time commitment.

Regulatory

1. Develops and maintains a thorough working knowledge of regulations and requirements affecting bereavement care delivery. Maintains functional knowledge of all Hospice Service lines and unique challenges presented to the delivery of bereavement care within those service lines.

2. Continually monitors and manages all bereavement services provided within the continuum of hospice care and ensures the quality, effectiveness and timeliness of the care provided.

Performance Requirements

1. Maintains knowledge of hospice services generally and hospice bereavement services specifically through literature review and attending in-services, seminars and conferences.

2. Provide effective leadership for bereavement staff and collaborate as a member of the hospice leadership team.

3. Effectively participate with staff in the accomplishment of organizational goals by interpreting those goals to local level operations.

4. Demonstrate knowledge, understanding and the ability to work effectively and collaboratively within DHCH and the larger health system.

5. Demonstrate excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Required Qualifications at this Level

Education

Position requires the completion of a Master's Degree in Counseling, Social Work or pastoral care.

Experience

A minimum of 5 years of related post graduate degree experience is required. Hospice experience with direct bereavement experience preferred. Management or supervisory experience in a hospice setting is preferred.

Degrees, Licensure, and/or Certification

LCSW preferred.
