General Description of the Job Class

Direct and coordinate clinical information system operations within Duke Hospital and Health System, ensuring consistency with DUHS philosophy and goals; compliance with applicable administrative and clinical practices; and the provision of efficient and effective customer service.

Duties and Responsibilities of this Level

Plan, secure, integrate, synthesize, and appropriate resources to achieve and effect the strategic goals of the organization.

Provide leadership, vision and oversight for complex enterprise projects. Establishes strategic and short-term plans for clinical information technology systems and projects.

Oversee and direct the design, acquisition, implementation, and evaluation of clinical information systems; and negotiate contracts with hardware and software vendors.

Plan and execute programs and activities that contribute to individual and group staff development and capacity building.

Act as educational and clinical consultant to individuals and groups internal and external to the department.

Develop and manage operational and capital budgets that meet the needs of the department and its customers.

Maintain liaison with representatives of other University computer operations, professional organizations and electronic data processing equipment manufacturers to exchange information on procedures and work methods; evaluate new facilities for application of hospital computer systems and programs.

Prepare reports and analyses setting forth progress, adverse trends and appropriate recommendations and/or conclusions on subjects relating to system management.

Direct various personnel activities including, but not limited to, hiring, promotions, performance appraisal, professional growth and transfers. Provides oversight for the delivery of customer service in all service components of systems implementation.

Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein.

Required Qualifications at this Level

Education

MSN required along with coursework in mathematics, computer science or a computer-related field.

Experience

Work requires five years of clinical nursing experience and six years of progressively responsible information system administration experience which includes leadership of a development team implementing a major information system, and some experience in a supervisory capacity.

Degrees, Licensure, and/or Certification

Current or compact RN licensure in the state of North Carolina required. BLS required.
