General Description of the Job Class

Provide and administer pastoral care and counseling and spiritual support for patients, families and staff in a major component of the hospital, and provide individual and group instruction to Chaplain interns and residents. Assist in the coordination of recruitment and admissions of students and curriculum development and program evaluation in our ACPE accredited program of Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE).

Duties and Responsibilities of this Level

Level 1 - ACPE Certified Associate Educator

Provide and administer pastoral care and counseling and spiritual support for patients, families and staff in a major component of the hospital, and provide individual and group instruction to Chaplain interns and residents. Assist in the coordination of recruitment and admissions of students and curriculum development and program evaluation in our ACPE accredited program of Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE).

In addition to the duties described in the Senior Clinical Chaplain level, performs the following:

Serve as a member of the instructional staff of the Divinity School.

Plan and administer units of ACPE Clinical Pastoral Education.

Instruct and supervise the educational process of Chaplain interns and residents who participate in the accredited program of Clinical Pastoral Education in Duke Hospital and its satellites.

Assist in coordination of recruitment and admissions, or curriculum development and program evaluation in the ACPE-CPE program.

Level 2 - ACPE Certified Educator

Provide and administer a full ministry of pastoral care and counseling and spiritual support to patients, families and staff in a major component within a teaching hospital, including assisting the director in the planning, implementation and evaluation of all accredited levels of ACPE Clinical Pastoral Education.

In addition to the duties described in the ACPE Certified Associate Educator level, perform the following:

Coordinate all aspects of recruitment/admissions or curriculum development/program evaluation for all accredited levels of ACPE Clinical Pastoral Education.

Provide instruction and supervision for the Chaplain interns and residents, and Chaplain fellows in Supervisory CPE. Coordinate with other teaching hospitals in North Carolina in the planning and implementation of an ongoing supervisory colloquium for Chaplain fellows engaged in Supervisory CPE.

Required Qualifications at this Level

Education

Master's in Divinity or its equivalent.

Completion of an accredited Supervisory CPE Program.

Additional graduate level work in a related field preferred.

Experience

Level 1 - One year in pastoral ministry, in church or institution and one year of supervising and teaching Chaplain interns or residents. Level 2 - One year pastoral experience in church or institution and two years experience as Associate Clinical Pastoral Education Certified Educator, supervising and teaching Chaplain interns and residents.

Degrees, Licensure, and/or Certification

Eligibility for 'Board Certified Chaplain' by the Association of Professional Chaplains. Ordination or commissioning by one's faith group or denomination. Level 1 - Certification as an Associate Certified Educator by the Association for Clinical Pastoral Education, Inc. Level 1 - Denominational endorsement as 'Chaplain Supervisor' or equivalent Level 2 - Certified as an ACPE Certified Educator by the Association for Clinical Pastoral Education, Inc. Level 2 - Denominational endorsement as an ACPE Certified Educator.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Skills in crisis intervention. Ability to provide pastoral care and spiritual support in a high stress environment. Ability to practice independently in an accredited CPE program. Skills in pastoral research and spiritual assessment. Extensive knowledge in pastoral theology and behavioral sciences. Knowledge of group dynamics and skill in group leadership. Physically capable of sustained work in high stress environment. For Level 2 - Ability to provide instruction, supervision and consultation to individuals in Supervisory Clinical Pastoral Education. For Level 2 - Skills in management of personnel and resources in a multi-staff department.
