General Description of the Job Class

The Nursing Information System Specialist I has advanced knowledge and proven application of that knowledge within a specific clinical discipline. The NISS has a basic knowledge of the functions and applications of clinical information systems.

Duties and Responsibilities of this Level

Interpret, modify, analyze and design clinical systems, data, and information with supervision. Implement applications, tools, processes, and structures that assist clinicians with the management of data in patient care and provision of health care.

Provide systems support including hardware maintenance, trouble shooting, component replacement and repair, system monitoring and the installation and maintenance of software. Participate in the planning and teaching of customer training sessions. Assist in making oral and written presentations to project teams and management.

Complete moderately complex tasks and portions of larger clinical information system projects with direction. Identify internal resources to build project team performance. Update system, operational and department documentation

Recommend areas for process improvement.

Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein.

Required Qualifications at this Level

Education

BSN required along with coursework in mathematics, computer science or a computer-related field.

Experience

Work requires five years of clinical nursing experience to include at least one year of computer experience.

Degrees, Licensure, and/or Certification

Current or compact RN licensure in the state of North Carolina required. BLS required.
