General Description of the Job Class

The Nursing Information System Specialist (NISS) II has expert knowledge of a specific clinical discipline and advanced knowledge of information technology and its applications to healthcare. The NISS II applies best practices to the management of the clinical information system life cycle.

Duties and Responsibilities of this Level

Analyze, design and research clinical information systems and processes. Analyze customer requirements; research, design, acquire and implement innovative systems. Evaluate and revise existing clinical information systems. Provide analysis and advanced support including hardware maintenance, trouble shooting, component replacement and repair, system monitoring and the installation and maintenance of software. Plan and presents customer training sessions. Make oral and written presentations to project teams and other departments.

Conduct continuing education sessions and new employee training. Precept NISS Level I. Coordinate simple to complex projects with direction. Optimize departmental and interdisciplinary resources to maximize team. Initiate, write and evaluate system, operational and department documentation. Identify areas for procedural improvements. Provide detailed specifications describing functions to be automated.

Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein.

Required Qualifications at this Level

Education

BSN required along with coursework in mathematics, computer science or a computer-related field.

Experience

Work requires experience equivalent to five years of clinical nursing experience; and three years of information system management which includes participation as member of a development team implementing a major information system

Degrees, Licensure, and/or Certification

Current or compact RN licensure in the state of North Carolina required. BLS required.
