General Description of the Job Class

As a member of the Duke University Health System (DUHS) senior leader team, the Chief Strategy Officer (CSO) will lead efforts to identify and oversee the development, implementation, and sustainment of strategies to grow and differentiate DUHS as an academic healthcare system. These strategies may include developing business opportunities to establish partnerships, mergers and acquisitions, innovative business models and programs, and payor strategies. These specialized approaches will create opportunities for clinical collaboration in care, research and education. This highly visible role will work collaboratively across the enterprise and externally to enhance the reach of DUHS. Key to formulating strategies for the long term, this resource must be able to influence others to embrace a broader vision of what could be in the organization beyond what has already happened.

Duties and Responsibilities of this Level

- Lead the planning and development as well as monitor the deployment of business strategies to advance the mission of the organization.

- Monitor near- and long-term market trends as well as emerging need/interests among key stakeholders (e.g. patients, providers, payors, vendors, etc.) to forecast future trends and opportunities that inform strategies.

- Remain current on relevant and contemporary competitive intelligence to Identify growth opportunities inside and outside the market area and develop the strategies to achieve that potential.

- Collaborate with DUHS senior and entity leaders to ensure strategic plans and goals align with organizational priorities and monitor/measure performance.

- Ensure strategies are well communicated and translated into actionable and quantitative plans for entities and work units/functions.

- Serve as a key contributor to the budget development and monitoring processes.

- Actively engage senior management throughout the planning and deployment process to ensure alignment.

Required Qualifications at this Level

Education

Bachelor's degree in business or health-related field required; Master's degree in Business, Finance, Hospital Administration, or related field preferred

Experience

The work requires 15 years progressive leadership experience. Successful past experience managing complex change initiatives in a health-care environment required. Comfort with working in a collaborative and consensus building environment. Demonstrated ability to work effectively with diverse stakeholders that have a broad range of experiences and perspectives. Must be a strategic and visionary leader that takes initiative, has the stamina, emotional intelligence and strong interpersonal skills to operate strategically and effectively oversee the tactics in order to help drive and achieve differentiating business results. Successful track record of innovation and business development.
