General Description of the Job Class

The Vice President of Clinical Operations and Administration of Duke University Health System and Vice Dean for Veteran???s Affairs, Duke University School of Medicine will be a Health Care Executive with extensive experience in personnel management, operations, institutional and professional business planning, strategic planning, and practice management in an academic setting who will work closely with the Chancellor, the Dean of the Medical School and their Senior Leadership teams in setting and meeting system goals. This position will be responsible for ensuring efficient and productive administrative operations for Duke Medicine, as well as assisting and collaborating in strategic program implantation. The position will work to develop and implement key new value added initiatives focused on the coordination of the institutional and professional clinical programs; including quality and compliance, as well as the integration of the clinical strategic plan into the research, and educational missions.

Duties and Responsibilities of this Level

The position will report to the Chancellor of Health Affairs of DUHS and coordinate the efforts of the Senior Leadership team on meeting their key program objectives. The position must maintain a high degree of communication, trust, and understanding of the needs of the Chancellor, DUHS Senior Leadership, the Clinical Chairs, Division Chiefs, and the leadership of the Duke School of Medicine. The position will work in collaboration with the Vice President and Chief Information Officer of the Duke University Health System regarding clinical technology assessment to further enhance our operational and financial positions. The position will work with the Chancellor to enhance the leadership and management skills of our future physician leaders at Duke University. The position will play a key leadership role in the coordination with the Department of Veterans Affairs, local healthcare insurers, and other key strategic partners.

Specifically, the position incumbent will:

Have direct supervision of facilities, architecture, parking, crisis management, compliance, occupational and environmental safety, and clinical trials compliance

Coordinate communication with senior leadership team and represent the Chancellor internally regarding DUHS activity.

Assure seamless integration of Acute and Ambulatory Service Lines to meet patient centered approach.

Assure seamless integration of DUHS and DU SOM operations.

Serve as a conduit for communication for faculty to the Chancellor???s Office.

Chair operations committee of DUHS.

Represent DU SOM, DUHS, and PDC to the VA

Represent DUHS to health insurance carriers regarding operations (not contract rates).

Play key role for Chancellor by coordinating efforts to assure that DUHS implements Key Strategic Goals.

Represent DUHS on PRMO oversight committee. (one of three DUHS members)

Work with the DUHS Performance Services Group to assure that the Chancellor???s office receives the data necessary to assure efficient and safe operation of DUHS.

Represent DUHS to DU regarding real estate and facilities

Serve as a member of the DUHS Compliance team to coordinate the objectives of the DUHS while upholding the highest standards

Be a member of DUHS IS Steering Committee

Perform other duties as assigned

Required Qualifications at this Level

Education

The position requires a masters degree and at least ten years of health care experience, preferably in an academic medicine environment.
