General Description of the Job Class

Responsible for the administrative oversight of the hospital Chaplain Services and ACPE Clinical Pastoral Education programs, Bereavement and Pastoral Volunteer programs including provision of patient pastoral care services and programs and promotion of community relations (especially with area clergy).

Duties and Responsibilities of this Level

Ensures the delivery of evidence based spiritual care to patients, families and staff regardless of faith, philosophical beliefs, or non- faith practices.

Provides administrative oversight of all aspects of the ACPE Clinical Pastoral Education Program to include: recruitment and admissions, curriculum development, student retention, and program evaluation.

Provides administrative oversight of the hospital Bereavement Program to assure a comprehensive program for addressing patient, family and staff grief and bereavement.

Provides administrative oversight of the department's Pastoral Volunteer program assuring that all volunteers are adequately trained and oriented to the offering of care and hospital procedures especially infection control.

Aligns department Scope of Practice, programs and goals with Duke University Hospital strategic goals as identified in the hospital's Balanced Score Card and specifically in the area of patient satisfaction.

Develops and implements programs to address the emotional and spiritual needs of patients, families and staff while paying particular attention to the spiritual practices of a diverse patient and staff population. Serves as spiritual care consultant to hospital medical staff.

Provides oversight of the use and maintenance of the Chaplain Service's offices and hospital chapels.

Significant involvement with the hospital's Critical Incident Response Program (CIRP) and staff resiliency programs serving as consultant on emotional and spiritual distress and care for a diverse staff.

Interfaces with the Duke Divinity School, Duke School of Medicine and the Duke School of Nursing. Serves on various boards and committees and advises on issues of spiritual care and ethics. Participates in the academic practice of care and education. Directs the supervision of the ACPE - Clinical Pastoral Educational program. Attends and presents at local, regional and national meetings for Clinical Pastoral Education.

Determines the fiscal requirements and prepare and manage budgetary recommendations for the department.

Required Qualifications at this Level

Education

Master's degree in Divinity and earned Doctorate, preferably a Doctorate in Divinity or Theology.

Experience

3-5 years of experience in a leadership capacity in a pastoral care department, preferably in a health care environment, supervisory experience working with all levels of ACPE ??? Clinical Pastoral Education training, and in provision of Critical Incident Response or Critical Incident Stress Management programs.

Degrees, Licensure, and/or Certification

Certification as an Association for Clinical Pastoral Education (ACPE) Certified Educator; Ordination as a clergyperson (or its equivalent) by faith group, and faith group Endorsement; Certification by the Association of Professional Chaplains (APC) an asset.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

- Facility to manage a diverse department staff. - Skills to work with a large, diverse hospital staff especially around issues of stress and resiliency. - Experience in providing crisis management and intervention. - Skill to provide consultation, leadership, instruction and supervision for individuals in all levels of ACPE-Clinical Pastoral Education and especially in supervisory education. - Ability to provide leadership and consultation to hospital staff regarding issues of spirituality, diverse spiritual traditions, and spiritual distress. - Extensive computer skills.
