General Description of the Job Class

Resident is engaged in a ministry of pastoral care and spiritual support for patients, families and staff within an assigned area of the hospital or health system. The resident participates in seminars and supervision for training in pastoral care and spiritual support.

Duties and Responsibilities of this Level

1. Provide ministry of pastoral care and spiritual support for patients, families, and staff within an assigned area of the hospital, under the supervision of a certified Clinical Pastoral Education Supervisor

2. Participates in assigned educational seminars and supervisory session on the residency program

3. Complete all written requirements for the residency program.

Required Qualifications at this Level

Education

Master's degree in theological education or related field of study. At the discretion of the program director, the Master's degree requirement can be waived for religions that do not have a Master's degree program if comparable coursework and/or certification has been obtained by the candidate.

Completion of one unit of CPE under the accreditation of the Association for Clinical Pastoral Education or the completion of a supervised, spiritual field education program is required.

Experience

Three months functioning in a pastoral role

Degrees, Licensure, and/or Certification

Ordained, commissioned, endorsed, or approved by one's faith group or denomination.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

1. Working knowledge of the practice of ministry

2. Demonstrated ability to enter into a learning contract

3. Ability to maintain the rigorous schedule of the residency requirements

Distinguishing Characteristics of this Level

This is the primary entry point into hospital chaplaincy and advanced training for community clergy. It is a combination of service/learning position which provides for pastoral care in the hospital and opportunities for professional development for the chaplain resident.
