General Description of the Job Class

As a member of the Duke Hospital pharmacy leadership team, the associate chief is responsible for assuring that Pharmacy Services are provided in a safe and efficient manner resulting in positive outcomes for patients. The associate chief champions inter-functional collaboration and communication across work areas and departments. With the Chief Pharmacy Officer and associate chiefs, he/she implements the strategic initiatives authorized by Duke University Hospital. The associate chief has control over all of the human, financial and informational resources allotted to his/her pharmacy cost centers.

Duties and Responsibilities of this Level

Monitors and develops continuous improvement in management, inventory control, utilization management, and staffing efficiency while achieving quality outcomes. Coordinates and monitors the pharmacy systems and processes to achieve ongoing operational and service improvements. Responsible for all aspects of medication safety. Recommends cost containment programs, and policies and/or procedures to improve efficiency, economy, and effectiveness.

Monitors productivity of employees and initiates modifications to improve productivity.Ensures delivery of pharmacy services within budgeted level of resources.Monitors annual operating budgets for the areas of responsibility, compares actual and budgeted activity and explains variances.

Champions inter-functional collaboration and communication across work areas and departments. Facilitates solutions to problems and resolves complaints regarding departmental services and activities. Provides in- service education or drug information when needed or requested to health care professionals.

Formulates departmental policy and procedure; ensures adherence to hospital, health system and departmental policies and procedures and applicable state and federal. Enforces medical center and departmental policies and procedures and ensures compliance with pertinent state and federal laws and regulations.

Plan and conduct meetings with subordinates to ensure compliance with established practices, to implement new policies and to keep employees abreast of current changes in standards. Manage various personnel actions including, but not limited to, hiring, merit recommendations, promotions and vacation schedules.

Perform related duties incidental to the work described herein.

Required Qualifications at this Level

Education

Work requires a bachelors or doctorate in Pharmacy. A masters in Business Administration or Pharmacy Administration preferred.

Experience

Completion of a health system pharmacy administration residency program OR Completion of a non-management pharmacy residency program and an additional two years of supervisory experience OR Three years clinical experience in a supervisory position

Degrees, Licensure, and/or Certification

Licensed Pharmacist or eligible to practice pharmacy in North Carolina. Certification in Basic Life Support.
