General Description of the Job Class

Plan, direct and coordinate activities involved in the acquisition, decontamination, storage, assembly, cleaning and sterilization of medical, surgical and related supplies, materials and equipment utilized in the care and treatment of patients and the operation of the Duke University Hospital Sterile Processing Department.

Duties and Responsibilities of this Level

Plan, direct and coordinate activities involved in the acquisition, decontamination, storage, assembly, cleaning and sterilization of medical, surgical and related supplies, materials and equipment utilized in the care and treatment of patients and the operation of the Duke University Hospital Sterile Processing Department. Interface regularly with Operating Room staff, advising physicians, nurses and other personnel regarding products, supplies, equipment, services, instrumentation, and other issues necessary to perform designated patient care medical and surgical procedures.

Manage various personnel actions including, but not limited to hiring, performance appraisals, promotions, transfers, and vacation schedules. Orients, supervises and evaluates Surgical Processing Instrument Technicians with job classification of Sterile Processing tech I, II, III IV. Other major duties include, but are not limited to, customer service and departmental efficiencies. Able to maintain, prioritize, and expedite work flow.

Coordinate with manager of quality control and education to conduct orientation, training programs, and staff development for all SPD personnel. Ensure that sterilization processes are compliant with state, Federal and JCAHO laws/guidelines. Promote a customer centric approach to all customers of the sterile processing department. Serve as a resource for information regarding proper sterilization techniques, product information, and equipment operation, as required by other healthcare team members.

Prepare department budget and manage financial performance of the sterile processing department within established guidelines.

Oversee the accuracy and performance of key departmental information systems to include but not limited to Dove Track, SPM, SAP and assures all stakeholders receive appropriate training in use of all department information systems.

Establish and maintain all policies and procedures required in sterile processing in accordance with The Joint Commission and AAMI guidelines. Ensure all staff is trained and compliant to established policies.

Develops performance improvement plans with metrics for the sterile processing department to achieve on an annual basis. Ensure PI plans are consistent with the organization overall performance improve objectives

Required Qualifications at this Level

Education

Work requires communication, analytical and organizational skills. Bachelor???s degree in a related healthcare/business field is required.

Experience

Work requires a minimum of 5 years of experience in sterile processing, operating rooms or similar setting, including at least 2 years in a supervisory capacity, acquired knowledge of decontamination, and sterilization sciences, case cart systems and medical/surgical supplies and equipment. Supervisory experience in a high volume, tertiary level 1 hospital preferred.

Degrees, Licensure, and/or Certification

Certification as Sterile Processing & Distribution Manager preferred.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

In-depth knowledge of the following standards: AAMI, AORN, FDA, JCAHO, OSHA
